ABSTRACT

Emerged more than one century ago, colonial architecture in Hanoi today melted well into the urban fabric of the multicultural layer city Hanoi. Yet, it plays a significant role along side with the much more age-old ancient quarter counterpart in the present day life. In looking for a sustainable urban and architectural morphology, the well being existent of the colonial architecture triggered interesting case studies for present day professional.
The study traces back to the context when colonial architecture established its first foothold in the outskirt of Hanoi. Discussion then looks into the evolution and transition of the totally new appearance urban form, which sustained till today through many harsh events of the history. Significant elements of the colonial urban architecture will be identified from the cultural viewpoints to support for the hypothesis of the sustainable urban form. Beside that, other views also will be discussed including the oppressed views at "colonial" remains which remaining for a long time.
Pursuing the objective of the paper, the hypothesis proposed a concept of multi cultural sustainability along side with ecological sustainability for the sustainable development for the widened city of Hanoi in present-day.
