Summary:

Abstract deadline: 15 January 2009

The 11th International Mosaic Colloquium (of the international mosaic colloquia sponsored by AIEMA) is being organized by the Uludað University Mosaic Research Center (AIEMA-Turkey) in Bursa, October 16-20, 2009.

This center helps plan and facilitate mosaic research in Turkey, and it is creating a data-base for documenting Turkish mosaics. Every year the center also arranges small international meetings to familiarize the scholarly world with Turkey’s mosaic heritage and to present current field-work in this domain.

All of the presentations made at the 2006 meeting in Bursa were published in a small volume that appeared earlier this summer. The meeting held at Gaziantep in June, 2007, included not only art historians, archaeologists and restorers but also mosaic artists. Thus several different types of mosaic activities were brought together and represented at the same gathering.

Theme of Colloquium and Call for Papers and Posters

The overall theme chosen for the International Colloquium in 2009 is “Mosaics of Turkey and Parallel Developments in the Rest of the Ancient and Medieval World: Questions of Iconography, Style and Technique from the Beginnings of Mosaic until the Late Byzantine Era”. This topic focuses attention on Turkey geographically and also gives wide latitude for other related studies.
