Call for papers deadline: May 1, 2007
Heritage and World Heritage is an international field where interests
in politics, commerce, indigenous community relations, scientific
research, representations of the past and creative performance are
joined. The World Heritage programme focuses international attention
on the need to maintain and restore meaningful places that refer
in one way or the other to the past.This Stockholm University/EIF
(Easter Island Fundation) session invites papers addressing the
complexity of the World Heritage phenomenon. We would welcome papers
discussing Heritage as an international phenomenon, and/or with
specific examples from the Pacific. Pacific Island nations are significantly
under-represented in the overall number of World Heritage sites,
particularly cultural sites. This conference session should thus
act as a point of focus and shared understanding for both Pacific
and European-based scholars and indigenous Pacific Islands people.
The session papers will be used as a point of departure for discussions
in the subsequent EIF conference workshop 'World Heritage and Identity
- Three Worlds Meet'.
Subjects for discussion in the various working sessions
will include:
- Easter Island archaeology: chronology, architecture and agriculture.
- World Heritage: International and Pacific perspectives;
- Easter Island anthropology and traditional history;
- GIS and computer applications in island landscapes;
- State of the art: Theory, interpretation and symbolism of Oceanic
rock art;
- Human impact on environment and landscape of Pacific Islands
- Language contacts in Pacific Islands and the Rongorongo script
of Easter Islands;
- Past Interactions within the Western Pacific: the archaeological
evidence
- East Polynesian archaeology: Recent archaeological research
and implications of Pacific pasts
