| Summary: |
The main objective of this program is to provide participants with
the latest theories, ideas and practices in heritage conservation
for use in professional practice. Increasingly, professionals active
in design, construction and urban design related fields are required
to work on heritage projects. The ISSHC presents both the theory and
the practical aspects of heritage conservation in order to ensure
that the knowledge and experience gained by the participants have
direct and practical application in their current and future professional
practices. Case studies and site visits provide a rich opportunity
to experience first-hand the application of ideas and principles as
well as practical know-how in heritage conservation.
The program is based on a participatory approach and exchanges
between students and professors are encouraged, thereby offering
the participants an opportunity to discuss professional issues with
the instructors and to benefit from each others' experience. Lectures
and seminars given by academics and professionals are followed by
site visits and case studies relating directly to issues discussed
during lectures and seminars. Each visit is followed by a discussion
of the experiences gained and the lessons learnt. Morning seminars
and lectures are usually followed by case studies in the afternoon.
A summative evaluation will be conducted at the end of each module.
ISSHC is composed of four independent modules of one week. Ideally
participants assist in all four modules, however, if due to certain
constraints one is not able to participate in all four, it is possible
to participate in one or a selection of modules. Registration priority
will however be given to those participating in all four modules.
Two weekend visits, one to Quebec City, a World Heritage Site and
the other to Ottawa, the national capital, are also organized to
further the discussions on ideas inspired by the site visits and
their applications to heritage conservation. Upon successful completion
of the program, a Certificate of Participation in ISSHC 2008 will
be offered. A post-ISSHC visit to New York City or Boston for those
interested can be organized.
