Summary: This Core Regional Course aims at establishing and developing professional qualifications and building the capacity of conservation professionals in the Arab Region and in the field of cultural heritage conservation. The overall goal of the ATHAR programme is to protect and promote the rich cultural heritage in the Arab region, and broaden access, appreciation and understanding of its past.

This is a foundation course. It will be followed by two specialized courses in 2009. Attendance on the foundation course is a prerequisite for attendance on the specialized ones. Endorsing institutions should note that applicants will be expected to complete the full cycle of all three courses.

Course Objectives and Expected Results
By the end of the course, participants will have acquired a critical approach to the conservation of heritage sites by:

  • understanding the basic (international) principles of heritage conservation processes in order to devise informed strategies for the conservation of heritage sites;
  • documenting and analysing existing physical conditions of heritage sites, diagnosing causes of deterioration, and assessing legal and institutional contexts;
  • recognizing methods for the identification of heritage sites and defining their significance;
  • identifying priorities for appropriate conservation interventions at an heritage site.
