Summary: A session at the international conference on Smart High Rise Development in Metropolitain Cities is dedicated to “Tall buildings in an heritage environment”:
  • What effect do high-rise buildings have on the historic townscape and street scenery of the city centre?
  • What are the conditions of locating high-rise buildings in a historical context and how can the design complement and add value to an historic setting?
  • What is a good practice and policy caring for the environment at a citywide and neighbourhood level?

High rising is on the agenda in Polish major cities. In Poland, renewed interest in highrising began in Warsaw, this trend has now spread to many of the Polish largest cities. Gdañsk has already received interest from developers to build high and this trend is likely to continue. It has become a trendy term.

The issues and factors affecting the success or failure of “smart highrising” and the impact on local economies are complex. At the same time the general public feels it is very emotional, there are as many pros as cons. Thus, there is a need for better discussion to encourage people to join the debate.

This conference will discuss topics such as the relationship between high-rise development and heritage, smart high-rise and social acceptance, high-rise buildings as urban flagships and tools for economic development and city branding, the impact on the environment and energy use. This International Conference will be preceeded by an INTA expert panel looking more closely into several high-rise development plans and initiatives.
