Summary: Two symposiums are organized respectively on the status of the restoration of Tyre and around an exhibition entitled "The Phoenicians and the Mediterranean".

The first symposium focuses on three main themes:

  • the results of the last missions to Tyre
  • the restoration of Tyre
  • the assessment of the actions carried out by the International Association for the Safeguarding of Tyre (AIST) and Future Projects.

It is organized by the International Association for the Safeguard of Tyre under UNESCO’s patronage and takes place at UNESCO Headquarters (Room II) on 5 November in the presence of the Director-General, H.E. Mrs Sylvie Fadlallah, Permanent Delegate of Lebanon to UNESCO, and other distinguished dignitaries, archaeologists, university academics and specialists.

The second symposium is held in the framework of the exhibition entitled "The Phoenicians and the Mediterranean" on 6 November 2007 at the Institut du Monde arabe (IMA), Paris. Several eminent academics, experts and museum specialists present papers on the various aspects of this prestigious site under two main themes: 1) Tyre and the/its Mediterranean Cities, and 2) Phoenician art. After the discussions, an Appeal ‘Tyre, Open City" will be made by H.E. Ambassador Bernard Dorin, President of the Amitiés Francophones, to be followed by a private tour of the exhibition "The Phoenicians and the Mediterranean".

Organized in collaboration with the Louvre Museum, this meeting takes place in the presence of Mr Dominique Baudis, President of the IMA, and H.E. Mr Boutros Asaker, Ambassador of Lebanon to France.
