As the mayor of Cordoba, the host city of the Regional Secretariat
for Southern Europe and the Mediterranean of the Organization of World
Heritage Cities, I am pleased to convene you for our 8th Regional
Conference, which will be held on December 3 and 4, 2008. This meeting
will take place in the city of Strasbourg (France), further to the
invitation of its mayor, Mr. Roland Ries, whom I sincerely thank for
his welcome. This meeting will also be the opportunity to celebrate
the 20th anniversary of the inscription of Grande île de Strasbourg
on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, which celebrations will be
held on December 5. You will find enclosed the program and the agenda
of the meeting.
This meeting follows that which took place after the OWHC World
Congress in Kazan in June 2007. We then held the 7th regional meeting.
However, unfortunately, the attendance was low at that meeting;
consequently, your presence at the next meeting in Strasbourg is
highly important.
In addition to the fact that we have to deal with a few major decisions
for the proper functioning of our European network of cities, we
will coordinate our presence at the 10th World Congress of the OWHC
in Quito (Ecuador), which will take place from September 8 to 11,
2009. During this world congress, elections will also be held to
choose the members of the next Board of Directors of the OWHC, as
well as the host city of the next World Congress, to be held in
2011.
