The digitisation of cultural heritage is a major priority in
the culture agenda of the French presidency of the Council of the
European Union. Digitisation and on line accessibility of the cultural
material from the Member states as well as digital preservation
are essential for valorising cultural heritage to the audience,
stimulating the creation of contents and fostering new on-line services.
They contribute to the democratisation of the access to culture
and to the development of the information society and the knowledge
economy.
2008 is a major step in the construction of the European digital
library, which is supported both by the European Commission and
the Member states. At the end of 2008, the prototype Europeana will
offer a multilingual access point to 2 million works from all types
of heritage spread accross Europe. The conference organised on 27
and 28 November, 2008 will address the achievements and the on-going
work in Europe : progress of the European projects (EUROPEANA, MICHAEL,
national and thematic portals), networking of digitised contents
(archives,libraries, museums, architectural and archaeological heritage),
new usesand new services for the public, models for public private
partnerships. This conference will demonstrates the commitment of
the French presidency for the dissemination of digitised cultural
heritage, which will also be dealt with by the conclusions to be
adopted by the Council of the European union on 20 and 21 November,
2008. |
