World Monuments Watch - Announcing the 2008 World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites
Every two years, WMF announces the World Monuments Watch list of 100 Most Endangered Sites to call international attention to cultural heritage sites around the world threatened by neglect, vandalism, armed conflict, or natural disaster. Now through the Watch, WMF encourages community support and highlights the need for technical and financial resources to assist in the rescue of endangered sites. Since the launch of the Watch in 1996, more than 75% of the sites have been saved or are well on their way, thanks to timely intervention. An independent panel of experts selects the panel from nominations submitted by preservation professionals, NGOs, governments. Sites of all types—from ancient to modern—are eligible, and “monuments” can be archaeological sites; residential, civic, commercial, military, or religious architecture; cultural landscapes; and townscapes.

Learning from the Modernists
For the commemoration of Tel Aviv's Centennial in 2009, the UNESCO Chair on Modern Heritage and the Tel Aviv Institute plan to publish a collection of articles titled "Learning from the Modernists" together with an international workshop. The publication intends to focus on a critical approach to the contribution and relevance of the Modern Movement to today's societies and architecture. We also wish to shed light on the lesser known examples of imprints of Modernism around the world, and promote a wider dialogue on Modernism in both professional practice and the academic world. You are invited to contact us and contribute an article. We will be grateful to receive a short abstract by September 15, 2007, and the final article by May 15, 2008.

Memory and Heritage - The Shimoni Slave Caves in Southern Kenya
Thursday 21 June from 4:30pm.
Herman Ogoti Kiriama, PhD Candidate, Deakin University, Faculty of Arts.
This paper, using a case study of Shimoni, a small village on the south coast of Kenya, attempts to understand how historical landscapes are represented, reproduced and maintained through the memories of the different groups that claim ownership or ancestry to Shimoni. The paper also attempts to understand the kind of cultural meanings and ideological aspects that have been and are still related to this landscape.
Shimoni has a mixed population and this has brought about contestation of the memory of the historical landscape. The various groups have different ‘memories’ and stories on the past functions of the historical. It seems that these versions are meant to ‘arouse and arrange memories in order to suit particular psychic needs’.
