Message
from Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO on the
occasion of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. 27 October 2007
Audiovisual records - which is to say moving images and recorded
sound - provide us with valuable entries into the past. They draw
us into the collective dramas of our recent history, they allow
us to experience, firsthand, how an art was practised, they show
us people going about their business in settings that may have changed
vastly, and indeed going about business that may have changed just
as much. They tell us a great deal about ourselves and others, where
we have been, and what makes us what we are.

Call for Universities to open up to i2010 European Digital Library
The European Parliament adopted on September 27th a resolution based
on the own-initiative report drafted by Marie-Helene Descamps (EPP-ED,
France) on i2010: towards a European digital library. It recommended
setting up in stages a European digital library in the form of a
single, direct and multilingual access point for the European cultural
heritage. The long term aim of the initiative should be to establish
a tool that covers all categories of cultural material. The Parliament
invited all European libraries to make available to the European
digital library works that are free of rights which they already
hold in digital form.

Le
Corbusier, Toward an Architecture
The book with which Le Corbusier obtained his greatest public success,
Vers une architecture, is a work of which readers are still insufficiently
aware as to the actual conditions in which it was produced, even though
the theoretical and aesthetic positions expressed in it have since
been the subject of many a discussion. Published in book form in 1923
with the addition of the unpublished chapter “Architecture ou
révolution?”, these twelve articles from l’Esprit
nouveau doubtless did more for Le Corbusier’s reputation at
the outset than did his early buildings.

Launching
of two publications of the Sapara culture
The Sapara Community lives in a part of the Ecuador and Peru Amazonia.
The Saparos developed in one of the areas of greater biodiversity
of the world and is the last representatives pertaining to an ethno-linguistic
group. Therefore, UNESCO/Quito carries out since 2003 a project for
"the revitalization of the sapara language" that is close
to be extinguished. As tangible results of this project, after 4 years
of coexistence and research with the Sapara Community, two books are
launched: Short grammar of the sapara language and the Aritiakus sons
and daughters of the red monkey... UNESCO.
