Bay Findings Released
A report into the historic values of the Recherche Bay site in the
state's far south has found that the location of the French Garden
is further inland on the peninsula than earlier assessments presumed.
The Minister for Tourism, Arts and the Environment, Paula Wriedt,
today released the final report of the French Archaeological Collaboration
Project at Recherche Bay. "This report comes after many
months of preparation, weeks of field work and a year of further
research, analysis and writing," Ms Wriedt said. "Much
attention has been given to Recherche Bay and its importance as
a landing site for French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux during

Abolition
to be remembered in future years
The Government today confirmed that the 23 August - UNESCO's day
for the International Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
- will be adopted as the focal date for national commemorations
in the years to come. The message of this Bicentenary has been 'reflecting
on the past looking to the future' and over the past 12 months the
nation has done just that as the bicentenary end of year booklet
published today demonstrates. All across the country people have
taken the opportunity to better understand this important and inescapable
part of our history, recognise the achievements of the abolition
movement and ensure that the history and impact of the slave trade
is not forgotten.

Tall
Buildings in Historic Urban Areas
The construction of tall and invasive buildings in historic urban
areas is an urgent problem throughout Europe, but especially in
Central and Eastern Europe. Increased awareness and better information
about planning tall buildings and the way they affect the (historic)
surroundings needs to be generated. In view of raising awareness
about this issue amongst the members of the Parliamentary Assembly
of the Council of Europe (PACE), Europa Nostra, in collaboration
with the Secretariat of the PACE, therefore produced a Motion for
Resolution that was presented to the Plenary Session of the PACE.

role of cultural heritage 4 October 2007
Representatives of different national associations of private
owners of historic buildings gathered in Brussels on 4 October 2007
for the annual meeting of their European network, the Union of European
Historic Houses Associations (UEHHA). The main focus of this European
gathering was on the educational role of cultural heritage which
was illustrated by presentations of several exemplary initiatives
and activities developed or supported by private owners of historic
buildings in the Netherlands, UK and France. Representatives of
the European Commission who took part in this meeting welcomed those
initiatives and fully recognised the important educational potential
of cultural heritage and the positive role which the private owners
can play in this context. Europa Nostra was invited to take part

whole of Europe. Heritage organisations that meet these criteria
can register via a website specially developed for this purpose.
This website in four languages (English - Dutch - French - German)
will be converted into an online database accessible to all before
the end of 2007. The project was initiated by three Flemish heritage
