One Of The Most Bio-Diverse Countries Of The World
(From Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) Oct. 8, 2007—The Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew and its partner organisations have used state-of-the
art remote sensing technology and methodologies to produce the first
vegetation atlas of Madagascar, one of the most bio-diverse and
unique countries in the world. This comprehensive atlas is the culmination
of over 20 years of conservation work led by botanical and conservation
institutions in Madagascar and abroad. It is unique in Madagascar
in that it provides a modern twist, using Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) to supply information that can be used to protect
and manage Madagascar's diverse flora in a sustainable way.

Water
and Ecosystems: Managing Water in Diverse Ecosystems to Ensure Human
Well-being Edited by Caroline, King with Jennifer Ramkissoon,
Miguel Clüsener-Godt and Zafar Adeel – United Nations University
Pres
The International Workshop from which this book developed, “Water
and Ecosystems: Water Resources Management in Diverse Ecosystems and
Providing for Human Needs”, was jointly organized by the United
Nations University’s International Network on Water, Environment
and Health (UNU-INWEH) and UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme
(MAB) and International Hydrological Programme (IHP). This important
meeting brought together many key partners in the protection and management
of water resources in selected ecosystems. This ongoing cooperation
includes a range of activities on different programmes for the conservation
and sustainable development of coastal areas, as well as cooperation
on issues relating to water and ecosystems, the principal priority
in the UNESCO Science Sector. |

The
Annual Earthwatch Debate: Precious Resources, Multiple Threats
Thursday 15th November (The Royal Geographical Society, London)
Last year's debate focused on climate change, a subject which quite
rightly dominated the headlines. However, while this is still of
paramount importance, are we losing sight of other factors which
are having a detrimental effect on the environment - over-exploitation
of resources, pollution, invasive non-native species, human populations,
unsustainable tourism? Which ecosystem is most under threat and
urgently needs protection?

Environmental
Ethics and International Policy
This collection of studies on environmental ethics by some of the
most eminent international experts in environmental ethics, which
appeared in English in 2006, has just been published in French.
The eight specialists commissioned by unesco, stress that, despite
greater
awareness and a growing interest in environmental questions, the
ethical aspect of such issues is still all too often neglected at
the political level.
