Penguins in peril as climate warms
The penguin population of Antarctica is under pressure from global warming, according to a WWF report. The report, Antarctic Penguins and Climate Change, shows that the four populations of penguins that breed on the Antarctic continent — Adélie, Emperor, Chinstrap and Gentoo — are under escalating pressure. For some, global warming is taking away precious ground on which penguins raise their young. For others, food has become increasingly scarce because of warming in conjunction with overfishing.

Global Change Research in Mountain Biosphere Reserves
UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, the International Hydrological Programme (IHP), and The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) joined forces in 2003 to assess and monitor the impact of global change in mountain biosphere reserves. This led to the “Global Change in Mountain Regions” (GLOCHAMORE) project to develop a worldwide strategy, in the short term, for the detection and identification of global change indicators, either bio-physical or socio-economic in nature that will lead to adaptation by mountain communities to better respond to global changes in the longer term. Over twenty biosphere reserves representing diverse mountain ecosystems in most of the world’s mountain regions actively contributed in the development of the research strategy.

Eastern Arc Seedlings and Forest Regeneration
A new website on forest regeneration in Tanzania offers information that helps in identification of seeds, fruits and seedlings of trees, shrubs and lianas; integrates science with knowledge of local human communities; and has conservation implications to be applied toward further research on plant regeneration and restoration of African forests. With the exception of tree species in high demand for timber, the early regeneration characteristics of most African forest trees remains poorly understood. Such knowledge of early forest regeneration is of paramount importance for conservation and restoration schemes in rapidly degrading tropical environments like the Eastern Arc Mountains.

Mediterranean Sea: most dangerous place on Earth for sharks and rays
More than 40% of shark and ray species in the Mediterranean are threatened with extinction, according to a new report from the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The first complete IUCN Red List assessment of the status of all Mediterranean sharks and rays has revealed that 42% of the species are threatened with extinction.
