Challenge Awards Program. Application deadline November 30, 2007
The Student Challenge Awards Program (SCAP) offers students aged
16-18 gifted in the arts and humanities an opportunity to spend
two to three intensive weeks during the summer at a scientific research
station. The aim is to excite the students' imagination, expand
their potential, and stimulate their curiosity about science and
technology. SCAP is a competitive fellowship program that rewards
creative thinkers and risk takers. The program is funded by an outside
donor and implemented by Earthwatch. This program also aims to support
the research and education initiatives of scientists by providing
mentoring opportunities, research grants, and the participation
of talented high school students. The funder is especially interested
in exposing students to the latest technology and innovative research
equipment and projects based at research stations that expose students
to a diversity of research.

Triumph
for Tigers
Dr. K. Ullas Karanth, a Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) scientist
and India’s leading tiger expert, has won the 2007 J. Paul
Getty Award for Conservation Leadership. This annual award from
the World Wildlife Fund honors outstanding contributions to international
conservation and carries with it a $200,000 prize. Karanth is the
first tiger expert to win the award.

Ramsar
Award for 2008: Call for nominations
The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award was established by the Conference
of the Parties in 1996 to recognize and honor the contributions
of individuals, organizations, and governments around the world
towards promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands. The
Award has been conferred in each of three categories at the COPs
in 1999, 2002, and 2005, and it will be again at COP10 in Changwon,
Republic of Korea, in October-November 2008 - and as in the past
it will be complemented by the Evian Special Prize, a cash prize
of US$ 10,000 for each of the categories, donated once again by
the Danone Group. Once again, too, the Award will be given in the
categories of management, science, and education. Nominations are
encouraged of persons or government or non-government organizations
that have taken initiatives that have contributed significantly
to the long-term conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, especially
those initiatives that might serve as inspirational and practical
examples for others. Nominations need to reach the Secretariat
by 31 January 2008 (award@ramsar.org)

Laureates
from Slovakia and Ethiopia receive 2007 Sultan Qaboos Prize for
Environmental Preservation
The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has
awarded the 2007 Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation
jointly to the Institute of Biodiversity Conservation (Ethiopia)
and to Dr Julius Oszlányi (Slovakia), in accordance with
the recommendations of the Bureau of the International Coordinating
Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, which
met in Paris 18 to 20 September.

The RMSU project office will be established in Brussels and its
duration will be 3.5 years. We are currently looking for full time
experts to lead the RMSU office. Responsibilities: Overall

Melina Mercouri Prize awarded to Russian Federation's Borodino Battlefield
At a ceremony held 4 October at UNESCO Headquarters Mrs Françoise
Rivière, Assistant Director-General for Culture, gave the
award for the International Melina Mercouri Prize for the Safeguarding
and Management of Cultural Landscapes (UNESCO-Greece) to the Borodino
Battlefield (Russian Federation). This prize, named after Melina
Mercouri, former Greek Minister of Culture, is financed by the Government
of Greece and consists of a cheque for an amount of US $20,000 for
the management of a cultural landscape. A special mention was also
awarded to the Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) (Mauritius).

Prize for the archaeological research celebrates its tenth anniversary
Thursday, November 8 , at 17.30 in the Carrousel du Louvre, with
occasion of the Salon du Patrimoine, Clio will award four archaeological
French speaking missions that work abroad. The awarded ones are
designated by an independent jury who, around its Chairperson Jean
Louis Huot, former director of the French Institute of archaeology
of the Middle East, gathers Françoise Dunand, director of
the excavations of El-Deir in the Egyptian oasis of Kharga, Jacques
Briend, professor of the Institut Catholique de Paris, Pierre Cabanes,
specialist in old Albania and Jean Guilaine, professor of the Collège
de France, specialist in the Neolithic of the Age of Bronze.

Peace with my Hands
Organizes activities for children and youth, to encourage communities
to live in harmony, with respect and tolerance for each other, and
strengthening personal values. Todos por Uruguay invites children
from public and private elementary schools, youth from high schools
and vocational training schools, as well as students enrolled in
institutes for people with special needs, to express their own interpretation
of the concept of PEACE through a piece of art work. The objective
of the project is to show Uruguayan talents as well as to promote
an educational activity which will encourage communities to live
in harmony, with respect and tolerance for each other, and strengthening
personal values. The use of different kinds of material is encouraged,
including recycled material. Students can work individually, as
a group or together with their families, and the work will be judged
according to these three categories.

for Associate Professor in East or Southeast Asian archaeology
The University of Hawai’i at Manoa is hiring a new entry-level
tenure-track position in East or Southeast Asian archaeology in
the Anthropology program, courtesy of the Luce Foundation Initiative
in East Asian Archaeology and Early History. The position will be
an assistant professor at the College of Social Sciences, Department
of Anthropology on a fulltime basis for nine months, beginning from
1 August 2008. Minimum qualifi cations are: PhD completed in Anthropology
or Archaeology by time of appointment, previous fi eldwork and/or
analytical experience in East Asia or Southeast Asia, a strong publication
record and active research programme, and ability to work collaboratively

The book Asia Conserved: Lessons Learned from the UNESCO Asia-Pacific
Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation(2000-2004) was officially
launched at the Phra Racha Wang Derm Palace (2004 Award of Merit)
on 16 August 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. The book has been published
with the primary support of the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust, with contributions
from UNESCO Beijing, UNESCO Islamabad, UNESCO Jakarta and UNESCO Phnom

Gold Awards 2007
The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)’s Gold Awards 2007
have been awarded to two AAHM affliated projects: The Cultural Heritage
Specialist Guide Programme, co-submitted with the Lao National Tourism
Administration (LNTA), under the category of "Education and
Training" and the Heritage and Friendly Tourism Campaign, submitted
by Heritage Watch under the category of “Heritage”.
The PATA Gold Awards recognise exceptional achievement in a variety
of endeavours, bringing acclaim to the best the Asia Pacific’s
travel industry has to offer. The winning projects set industry
standards for excellence and innovation, serving as examples for
others to follow. All award recipients will be honoured during a
special luncheon at PATA Travel Mart 2007 in Bali, Indonesia, 28
September 2007.

The CBD Secretariat has received a Twentieth Anniversary Ozone Protection
Award in the partners Award category in recognition of its role

Belizean
musician Andy Palacio designated UNESCO Artist for Peace
The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has designated
the celebrated Belizean musician and singer Andy Palacio a UNESCO
Artist for Peace. Born in 1960 in the coastal village of Barranco,
in Belize, Andy Palacio started to gain popularity in Belize and
abroad in the late 1980s. He has since become his country’s
most popular musician and one of the most prominent defenders of
the regional Garifuna culture and traditions.

The
Wadsworth African Fellowships. Application deadlines: 1 December

The Wadsworth African Fellowships are intended to provide support
for African students undertaking study leading to a Ph.D. at a South
African university that can provide them with international-level
training in anthropology (including biological anthropology and
archaeology). The annual fellowship is $17,500 and can be used towards
travel, living expenses, tuition, student fees, insurance, books,
research expenses, and any other relevant categories of expenditure
while studying at the Host institution. The fellowship is renewable
for up to two additional years upon successful completion of each

Retrospective of the Mies van der Rohe Prize 1998-2005
Prize of the European Union for the contemporary architecture. The
Mies van der Rohe prize of contemporary architecture is the most
prestigious European prize. With a Biennial nature, it has the support
of the European commission. This exhibition, projected by the Mies
van der Rohe Foundation of Barcelona, presents the projects of the
2007 session. Next to the winning project, the Museum of contemporary
art of Castilla Leon (MUSAC) by Spanish architects Luis Mansilla
and Emilio Tuñón, we found the works of Slovenian

Call
for proposals - EUROMED YOUTH III Programme
Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morroco, The Palestinian Authority and
Turkey have now launched their second Call for Proposals while Tunisia
and Syria have published their first one. Organisations and institutions
active in the field of Youth have again 2 months to answer the Call
for Proposals launched by their country’s Euromed Youth Unit.
After receipt of applications, envelopes are officially opened and
projects assessed; an evaluation committee eventually decides which
projects will receive a grant.

In a first case, the program considers projects that include a number
of pluriannual cultural activities with the objective to encourage

Jikji Prize awarded to Austria’s Phonogrammarchiv
In an impressive ceremony held on 4 September 2007 in Cheongju City,
in the Republic of Korea, the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy
of Sciences formally received the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of World Prize
certificate and cheque.
