Historic
Environment – Call For Papers
In 2009 Historic Environment is planning to publish two thematic
issues and is looking for contributions:
Heritage and the Media. Newspaper articles, reports and
documentaries on both television and radio, along with websites
can all be vital resources for raising public awareness about heritage...
Heritage and Development. Marrying the agendas
of conservation and development is a perennial challenge. Urban
expansion, the arrival of new industries to an area, changing lifestyles
and tourism development all threaten the very survival of important
heritage resources...

Nubia
revisited” The archaeological heritage of the 1960’s
On 14 of February, UCO in cooperation with the Supreme Council
of Antiquities and the Nubia Museum has organized, an inspirational
talk with Prof. Hans Ake Nordstrom, member of the Joint Scandinavian
Expedition to Nubia during the UNESCO Salvage Campaign in the sixties
, on “ Nubia revisited: The archaeological heritage of the
1960’s”. The event, which drew the attention of both
locals and foreign scholars working in the area, has been a good
opportunity for launching the idea of an International Conference
on the topic, to be organized next year on the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of the UNESCO appeal. This would be the first of this
kind to take place in Nubia and will serve not only to revive memories
of the past but also to envisage the perspective for the future
of the area.

Program
of Protection to the Ethnolinguist diversity of the Ministry of
Culture seeks to conserve five native languages on the verge of
extinction
Since 1914, when missionary groups arrived to the forests of the
Vaupés, members of the Kuveo indigenous community started
to understand that to defend themselves from the white men they
needed to speak their language. That was at least what they told
them: in order to be able to take a place in the world, they needed
to speak Spanish. Similar cases throughout the country demonstrate
that the expansion of Spanish has led to several languages on the
verge of extinction. For that reason, the Ministry of Culture, in
the so-called International Year of Languages declared by the United
Nations, launches its Protection Program to Ethnolinguist Diversity…
