newsletter TRAINMONHER: Morelia Course (Mexico)
TRAINMONHER Partners have met in Morelia (Mexico) for the second
distance course in the University Michoacán de San Nicolás
de Hidalgo. This course of high university level, entitled Restoration
and valuation of the built cultural heritage, took place from 9
to 13 June 2008 in the cultural Center of the university with applied
case studies in the historical city of Morelia. 21 Mexican students,
of two different specialties (Faculty of architecture "Masters
in heritage restoration" and School of Civil engineering) followed
the training. The pedagogical principle for the students was to
follow specific lessons on site and later on, work online by means
of an open platform and make a group project on the creation of
thematic tourist itinerary "architecture and materials"
around 3 emblematic monuments of the city (Cathedral, House of Morelos
and Aqueduct). The program of the course (accessible in the TRAINMONHER
Web site) articulates around 4 pedagogical modules:
1, Module 1: History of art and architecture
2, Module 2: Materials and construction skills
3, Module 3: Diagnosis of the historic monuments
4. Module 4: Management and valuation of historic monuments. The

sites in Japan-web site
Here on this planet, there are a multitude of irreplaceable heritage
sites for humans, such as magnificent geographical formations, a
whole spectrum of animals and plants as well as an infinite number
of relics that developed unique cultures. We categorize world heritage
as precious assets having been created through generations on earth
and the history of mankind, which we have now inherited at this
time. These values not only include external appearance like shape,
form or scale, but also track the living people around them such
as systems and customs for maintaining and inheriting these precious
assets.

At Risk 2006-2007. ICOMOS World Report 2006/2007 on Monuments and
Sites in danger Edited by Michael Petzet and John Ziesemer
ISBN: 978-3-937940-47-2
The new World Report 2006/2007 consists of contributions from about
40 countries, complemented by thematic reports from International
Committees (underwater archaeology, rock art, vernacular architecture,
legal questions, and polar heritage) and by 12 reports on a special
focus which is of topical interest worldwide: Global Climate Change
(pp. 191-226). Until recently this topic was barely addressed internationally
in regard to cultural heritage protection and conservation. The climate
change papers discuss, for instance, fundamental considerations of
threats to our cultural heritage today and in the future (“every
cultural heritage at risk?”), changes in the Polar regions,
examples such as the impact on the frozen tombs in the Altai Mountains,
disasters like the fires in Australia and Greece, and the impact of
Hurricane Katrina on the New Orleans area. The contribution on “Amazonia,
Monument of Nature” (pp. 40/41) is another special focus with
regard to the correlation between culture and nature. |

Heritage
Tourism in Australia - A Guide for Historical Societies by Dianne
Snowden now available online
In May 2008 the Federation of Australian Historical Societies (FAHS)
published its most recent guide for members of Australian historical
societies. Unlike previous guides, this ‘book’ has been
published exclusively on the web and is available to everyone free
of charge. This publication reflects the growing interest in heritage
tourism in Australia, and the vital role that the nearly 1000 local
historical societies already play in facilitating access to local
heritage, and will increasingly play in the future. Historical societies
are major repositories of local knowledge and memory, and through
their collections, museums and advice, do a great deal to make history
and heritage available to both locals and visitors. |

Discoveries:
The latest archaeology treasures
By Brian-M Fagan
Edited by: Editions de La Martinière
Year : 2008
EAN13 : 9782732436999
For several years, archaeology has regularly been on the front page
of our newspapers. The body of the unfortunate Otzi, dead 5,000
years ago, found in the Autria-Italian Alps, the decorated grottos
paleolitic discovered in the South of France, the ruins of Greek
cities explored in the bottom of the Mediterranean, each one of
these discoveries has clarified a new aspect of the history of the
humanity. The progress of technology is so great that many findings
of modern archaeology are already carried out in laboratories: medical
science transforms our knowledge of the Pharaohs and "reconstitutes"
Neanderthal men from DNA. This work, which gives the word to the
discoverers themselves, offers a glance without precedents on contemporary
archaeology. 320 spectacular photographs – many of them taken
at the same moment of the discovery, in the work of the excavations
– invite to immerse in 2 million years of history. |

Culture
and International Law By Paul Meerts
Year: 2007
ISBN-13: 9789067042833
How do different cultures deal with international law and how does
international law influence the rules and regulations of these cultures?
Is international law an effective tool in protecting cultural heritage,
especially in wartime? Does it protect the heritage of cultures in
a balanced way? Above all, how do you define ‘culture’
and ‘international law’? These important questions were
asked at the Fourth Conference of the Hague Academic Coalition (HAC)
(entitled ‘From Peace to Justice’) in April 2007... |

Preventive
archaeology in the world: contributions of preventive archaeology
to the knowledge of the past
By : Jean-Paul Demoule
ISBN : 2707152129
Year : 2007
From the 1980’s, the development of preventive archaeology
– together with the multiplication of urbanization works of
the territory and the recent legal recognition of the discipline
in France – has allowed a strong evolution of the knowledge
on the past. Thanks to the extension of the areas studied and the
importance of the update of the archaeological series, there is
already a completely new corpus accessible. A new approach of the
Palaeolithic, Neolithic or the Age of iron is possible, at the same
time, large amounts of data are available, specially on the Romanization
of Gallia or the Middle Age, to take only the French territory as
example … |

Corbusier's Chapelle de Notre-Dame du Haut at Ronchamp
A petition destined for the French Minister of Culture, to prevent
new construction near Le Corbusier's masterpiece - The Chapel of
Ronchamp. The plan is for a Renzo Piano-designed visitor's center,
a cluster of 12 cells for nuns, and a meditation space down the
slope and about 175 feet from Le Corbusier’s 1955 masterwork.
The petition appears to already carry the signatures of more than
