- Buenos
Aires and Montevideo to declare Tango as world cultural heritage
The cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo carried out a joint
presentation to UNESCO so that tango is declared world intangible
cultural. In 2003, the UNESCO convention defined world intangible
cultural heritage as the uses, representations, expressions, knowledge
and skills of the communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals,
that are part of their cultural heritage. In the meanwhile, in
the proclamation program established in 2007 two classes of manifestations
of intangible cultural heritage were distinguished: popular and
traditional cultural expressions and cultural spaces.

- World
Day for Audiovisual Heritage. 27 October 2008 - Theme: "Audiovisual
Heritage as a witness of Cultural Identity"
Today is World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, a day for reflecting
on the power of film, television and radio to transmit ideas and
information and in so doing nurture dialogue among and between
communities around the world. While heritage permits us to understand
the past, it also reflects the cultural identities and diversity
of communities living today, with audiovisual heritage, in particular,
being a primary means for contemporary societies to portray their
values and express their creativity. Indeed, radio and television
are the most widely used means of transmitting cultural products
globally. As well as being important sources of information, the
immediacy of sound recordings and moving images, with their power
to span linguistic, cultural or other barriers, permit peoples
from different walks of life to understand each other and share
experiences directly.

- Pre-demolition
Documentation - Site Visit - HOBSON'S BAY - VICTORIA - AUSTRALIA
Victorian members of ICOMOS are invited to a special site inspection
on Wednesday, 22 October between 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm. The City
of Hobson’s Bay is about to issue a demolition permit for
a c1854 timber cottage located at 31 Russell Place, Williamstown
(Melways Map 56 B7). The building is much altered, in a ruinous
condition and beyond reasonable rehabilitation, alteration and
extension. An appeal against the refusal of a previous planning
permit application indicated that VCAT supports demolition and
appropriate redevelopment. One of the conditions of the demolition
permit will be that the owner has undertaken full documentation
of the significant fabric. Contact Dr Colin Long : colin.long@deakin.edu.au
- Historical
archive of Francisco de Miranda available online (page 7)

for Co-operation with UNESCO managed to digitize documents kept
in the National Historical Archive and now they are available
for everyone at www.bnv.gob.ve. This project is part of a world
initiative that searches for the preservation of the documentary
world heritage. Contact: natcom.venezuela@mre.gob.ve

- Expressions
of Interest sought for inclusion of original work in the journal
CRM: The Journal of Heritage Stewardship
US/ICOMOS, in partnership with the United States National Park
Service is seeking expressions of interest from members of ICOMOS,
who may wish to have innovative and original work considered for
publication in CRM: The Journal of Heritage Stewardship, which
is published both in hard copy and electronically available at
http://crmjournal.cr.nps.gov/Journal_Index.cfm.
The objective of this initiative is to increase the dissemination
among the readers in the United States and overseas of important
ideas and experiences in cultural heritage management from all
over the world. Note that ten percent of the readership is from
outside the United States, and rising. Because the circulation
is so large, this is a great way for selected authors to receive
broad international exposure.
- New
blog for ICOMOS Perú

Safeguarding
Intangible Heritage and Sustainable Cultural Tourism: Opportunities
and Challenges
Cultural heritage is more than the monuments and objects that have
been preserved over time. The cultural heritage of humanity also includes
the living expressions and traditions that people receive from their
ancestors and pass on to their descendants. Safeguarding Intangible
Heritage and Sustainable Cultural Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges
studies the issues related to intangible heritage preservation and
presents strategies for doing so sustainably. Special attention is
given to handicrafts, performing arts and living heritage in the context
of nature, agri- and eco-tourism. |

The
Economic Dimensions of Carnival of Buenos Aires: Impact or Economic
valuation? by Mónica Lacarrieu
The carnival of the city of Buenos Aires refers almost exclusively
to a story of misunderstandings and tensions in which its "devaluation"
as both testimonies selected for this introduction show has been
both simultaneous and contradictory, one of the features the "murgueros",
its leading characters" value most. Both the socio-political
prejudice that this festivity associated with "Negroes"
has brought about, and its popular character make it a contradictory
celebration for its participants as it is built upon the idea of
"open to the entire world" although it is despised by
those in power...

Cuaderno
social e humano. |

Future
Anterior. Journal of Historic Preservation, History, Theory, and Criticism,
GSAPP, Columbia University Editor: Jorge Otero-Pailos
An international point of reference for the critical examination of
historic preservation. Future Anterior approaches historic preservation
from a position of critical inquiry, rigorous scholarship, and theoretical
analysis. The journal is an important international forum for the
critical examination of historic preservation, spurring challenges
of its assumptions, goals, methods, and results. As the first and
only journal in American academia devoted to the study and advancement
of historic preservation, it provides a much-needed bridge between
architecture and history. The journal also features provocative theoretical
reflections on historic preservation from the point of view of art,
philosophy, law, geography, archeology, planning materials science,
cultural anthropology, and conservation. Future Anterior is essential
reading for anyone interested in historic preservation and its role
in current cultural debates. Future Anterior is published twice per
year in May and December. |

- Industrial
metallurgy in western Europe in the Copper Age
The town the Capitelle du Broum, which dates from the Copper Age
(3000-2400 B.C.), is the only industrial metallurgical establishment
of western Europe of that time strongly associated with the copper
mines and metallurgical activities. It is part of the mining site
of Cabrières, one of the earliest French centers of production
of copper and metallurgy, complex and unique in western Mediterranean.
The excavations of the Capitelle du Broum (2000-2002), first part
of a French-Chilean archaeological project that concentrates on
the “prehistoric copper mineral operations”, allowed
to update the oldest metallurgic structures of western Europe
in the context of a town of dry stone walls cabins with double
wall, a classic of the interior of the Montpellier region.

Traditional Arts and Crafts in Bosnia and Herzegovina
ISBN 88-902157-0-4
Year: 2005
The Balkan peninsula comprises three geographically distinct regions.
It is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea and has
a mountainous central continental region that slopes downwards in
the north towards the Sava plains. While the north is subject to
the influence of central Europe and the South reflects the impact
of the mediterranean, therefore, the continental region, which historically
has always been the most difficult to conquer and consequently impervious
to outside influences, is considered the most authentically Balkan.
