  • World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. 27 October 2008 - Theme: "Audiovisual Heritage as a witness of Cultural Identity"
Today is World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, a day for reflecting on the power of film, television and radio to transmit ideas and information and in so doing nurture dialogue among and between communities around the world. While heritage permits us to understand the past, it also reflects the cultural identities and diversity of communities living today, with audiovisual heritage, in particular, being a primary means for contemporary societies to portray their values and express their creativity. Indeed, radio and television are the most widely used means of transmitting cultural products globally. As well as being important sources of information, the immediacy of sound recordings and moving images, with their power to span linguistic, cultural or other barriers, permit peoples from different walks of life to understand each other and share experiences directly.

The Economic Dimensions of Carnival of Buenos Aires: Impact or Economic valuation? by Mónica Lacarrieu
The carnival of the city of Buenos Aires refers almost exclusively to a story of misunderstandings and tensions in which its "devaluation" as both testimonies selected for this introduction show has been both simultaneous and contradictory, one of the features the "murgueros", its leading characters" value most. Both the socio-political prejudice that this festivity associated with "Negroes" has brought about, and its popular character make it a contradictory celebration for its participants as it is built upon the idea of "open to the entire world" although it is despised by those in power...

Year: 2005

The Balkan peninsula comprises three geographically distinct regions. It is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea and has a mountainous central continental region that slopes downwards in the north towards the Sava plains. While the north is subject to the influence of central Europe and the South reflects the impact of the mediterranean, therefore, the continental region, which historically has always been the most difficult to conquer and consequently impervious to outside influences, is considered the most authentically Balkan.
