The
Director-General visits Papua New Guinea
From 20 to 22 February, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, paid his first official visit to Papua New Guinea, marking
the beginning of his fourth trip to the Pacific Nations where he
is expected to visit eight Small Island States.

Closing
ceremony of the world launch of the international Year of Planet
Earth
On the occasion of the closing ceremony of the world launch of the
international Year of Planet Earth (see Flash info n. 17-2008),
the General directo extracted the lessons of the fruitful discussions
that took place on February 12 and 13 in the headquarters of the
Organization.

Official
visit of the Director-General to Israel (4-7 February 2008)
The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, paid his
first official visit to Israel, from 4 to 7 February 2008. The visit
provided him with the opportunity to meet bilaterally with the highest
authorities and representatives of the academic and scientific community
in the country on progress of the cooperation between UNESCO and
the State of Israel. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the
enhancement of this cooperation was signed with Mrs Zipi Livni,
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on 6 February.
Mr Matsuura was accompanied throughout his visit by Ambassador David
Kornbluth, Permanent Delegate of Israel to UNESCO.
