The
Director-General’s official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina
From 24 to 26 March 2008, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General
of UNESCO, paid his third visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Throughout
his visit, the Director-General was accompanied by Ambassador eljana
Zovko, Permanent Delegate of Bosnia and Herzegovina to UNESCO.

The
Director-General visits the Solomon Islands
On 29 February, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, paid his first official visit to the Solomon Islands.
He is the first Director-General to visit the country since it became
a Member of the Organization in 1993. The Solomon Islands consist
of nearly one thousand volcanic islands and coral atolls. This trip
marks the end of Mr Matsuura’s fourth official visit to the
Pacific Island Nations.

The
Director-General visits the Republic of Nauru
From 28 to 29 February, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, undertook his first official visit to the Republic of
Nauru. He is the first Director-General to visit the country since
it became a Member of the Organization in 1996. Up until the 1990s,
the Republic of Nauru was amongst the richest countries in the world
in terms of per capita income. Since then, however, the country
has been facing serious economic problems due to the depletion of
its phosphate resources and the mismanagement of its financial assets.

The
Director-General visits Tuvalu
From 27 to 28 February, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, paid his first official visit to Tuvalu. He is the first
Director-General to visit the country since it became a Member of
the Organization in 1991. The Director-General met with the Prime
Minister Mr Apisai Lelemia, whom he had previously met in December
2007 at the First Asia-Pacific Water Summit in Beppu, Japan...

The
Director-General visits the Republic of Kiribati
The Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, undertook
his first official visit to the Republic of Kiribati from 26 to
27 February. Mr Matsuura is the first Director-General to visit
the country since it became a Member of the Organization in 1989.
Based on a 1995 realignment of the International Date Line, Kiribati
is now the easternmost country in the world.
