Forum UNESCO-University and Heritage (FUUH) is an UNESCO Project for undertaking activities to protect and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage, through an informal networkof higher education institutions. FUUH is under the joint responsibility of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain. This internet website is not an official site of UNESCO but a website created and managed by the UPV within the framework of the project FUUH.

Third Meeting of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict
On 4 June 2008, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, opened the Third Meeting of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, established by the Second Protocol (1999) to the 1954 Hague Convention. Commending the Committee on the success of its second meeting, held at UNESCO from 17 to 19 December 2007 and which resulted in the development of Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the Draft Guidelines for the Implementation of the Second Protocol, the Director-General encouraged it “to continue the important task of elaborating the draft guidelines through collective examination of three additional draft chapters, focusing on the dissemination and monitoring of the implementation of the Second Protocol, and international assistance…”

South-East European Heads of State pledge to use regional waterways to foster understanding
The contribution of waterways to the development of South-East Europe’s cultural diversity, and their continuing role in fostering intercultural dialogue, is at the heart of the Athens Declaration adopted by seven Heads of State and other high-level representatives at a regional summit held in the Greek capital today. The Summit of Heads of States of South-East Europe was organized by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, and Koïchiro Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO, in collaboration with the Council of Europe. It was attended by high-level political leaders and experts from the region, who focussed their discussions on the importance of maritime, river and lake routes as networks of intercultural communication, and their impact on the region’s values, knowledge systems and life styles.

The Director-General holds talks with President Medvedev of the Russian Federation
From 9 to 12 June 2008, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, paid his eighth visit as the Director-General to the Russian Federation. As a highlight of the visit, Mr Matsuura had an extended discussion with Dmitry Medvedev, President of Russia. Preceding that, they participated in the opening of the 10th World Congress of the Russian press.

The restored fresco of the "Dream of the Virgin" displayed in the UNESCO’s headquarters
The exhibition of the fresco painting "Dream of the Virgin", located in the Saint Vincent de Chalon-sur-Saône cathedral, was inaugurated on June 5 in the headquarters of UNESCO by Director General, Koï chiro Matsuura, in the presence of Mr. Yutaka Iimura, ambassador of Japan in France, Mr. Seiichi Kondo, Ambassador of Japan for UNESCO, Ms. Catherine Colonna, Ambassador of France for UNESCO, Mr. Hirotaka Watanabe, Minister in the Embassy of Japan in France, Mr. Mineo Kambe, Director of the Department of art of the University of Nagoya, and Mr. Hisao Takahashi, painter and author of the restoration.

The President of Cabo Verde visits UNESCO
In his way to Japan where he will participate with the Director General of UNESCO in TICAD IV, the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Pedro Pires, met with Koïchiro Matsuura on May 26th 2008 in the headquarters of the organization in Paris. During the interview that took place in the presence of José Armando Duarte, ambassador, permanent delegate of Cabo Verde for UNESCO, several topics of interest were discussed.
