Forum UNESCO-University and Heritage (FUUH) is an UNESCO Project for undertaking activities to protect and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage, through an informal networkof higher education institutions. FUUH is under the joint responsibility of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain. This internet website is not an official site of UNESCO but a website created and managed by the UPV within the framework of the project FUUH.

  • Associate Lecturer/Lecturer – Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management, Flinders University
    The Department of Archaeology at Flinders University is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Archaeology/CHM into a continuing position at either Level A (without PhD; Associate Lecturer) or Level B (with PhD; Lecturer). The Associate Lecturer/Lecturer in Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management (CHM) will be responsible for contributing to, coordinating and teaching topics in the undergraduate, Honours and Graduate Programs in Archaeology and CHM, by taking primary responsibility for teaching topics in heritage management, Indigenous heritage and undertaking relevant research activity. They will be required to maintain partnerships with existing industry and government partners, as well as to develop new linkages.

  • PhD Scholarship
    The Architecture Museum, UniSA, is administering a project sponsored by HASSELL. The project will study international design theory and practice and the formation, work and people of HASSELL, c1945-1995. Applicants must have a proven capacity of research, usually with First Class Honours or Masters or equivalent standing, a background in design (architecture, planning, urban design, landscape architecture, interior design) and be accepted as a candidate for a doctoral degree at UniSA.   • Afghanistan wins inaugural prize in UNESCO ASIA PACIFIC heritage awards
    Herat Old City in Afghanistan and Stadium Merdeka in Malaysia have been recognized with two Awards of Excellence in the 2008 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation. The Herat project is the first winner from Afghanistan in the nine cycles of the UNESCO Heritage Awards programme. The jury praised the project for “overcoming tremendous challenges and demonstrating the important role of cultural revitalization as an integral part of the process towards establishing normalcy in a post-conflict situation.” The project was undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) as part of its mission to sustainably develop heritage communities.

  • 2008 Asia Pacific Mural Contest-Bright idea to highlight climate change (The Filipines)
    The sun and its rays drawn as human hands provide a powerful image of how the world can unite to tackle climate change. Each smiling face in the cloud symbolizes the ever growing number of people gaining greater awareness about the issue and how they intend to address the problem. That was how a group of Ateneo de Manila University students in the Philippines described their first prize mural, Let Hands Shine to Breathe Better, under the theme of Action for Climate Change. The university’s Environmental Science Society beat 34 entries from six countries in the UNESCO Bangkok Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2008 Asia Pacific Mural Contest.

  • Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts: Media Release – Grants Open for Voluntary Environment and Heritage Organisations
    Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, today called for applications for 2008-09 grants under the strengthened Grants to Voluntary Environment and Heritage Organisations (GVEHO) program.
    Mr Garrett said not-for-profit organisations had:
    • provided valuable input to public debate and policy development on environmental and historic heritage matters;
    • rehabilitated natural assets of local, national and international significance;
    • restored and conserved invaluable heritage places and artefacts; and
    • been the vehicle through which environmental and heritage skills are learnt and refined.

    Mr Garrett said the multi-year grants allowed for forward planning by organisations and cut the administrative costs of reapplying each year.
    Grants cover day to day running costs such as office rental, utilities, office supplies, staff and volunteer training and are open to national, state/territory, regional and local organisations geared towards:

    • The protection and/or enhancement of the natural environment; or
    • The protection and /or conservation of Australia’s historic heritage

    The Team Leader Conservation Policy PO4 ($77,664 - $84,895) will be a member of a highly skilled management team leading change. The Team Leader will lead a creative team of accomplished professionals influencing the direction of heritage conservation policy and conservation management in South Australia. We are looking for an experienced Heritage Architect. However, applicants from other heritage disciplines with the right experience should also apply.   • PORT LOPEZ. Prize for Agua Blanca (Ecuador)
    The Agua Blanca commune, in Port Lopez, will receive the prize for conservation, development and establishment of the material heritage and intangible Hernán Crespo Toral. It is an allocation of eleven thousand dollars, besides a medal and a diploma, that the Coordinating Ministry of Natural Cultural heritage and the Ministry of Culture of Ecuador grant to recognize the value of people, institutions or organized groups that through the years have had a key role in the conservation, protection, development and dissemination of the Ecuadorian heritage.

  • Equator Prize - Preserving Biodiversity Alleviating Poverty
    The Community Development Centre (CDC) in Sri Lanka won the Equator prize for preserving traditional vegetables, especially yams and tubers. The project, initiated in 1996 in the south eastern village of Aranayaka in the Kegalle district, has discovered 58 varieties of tasty nutritious yams and roots grown by villagers, some of which were nearly disappearing from the daily diet of communities due to changes in dietary habits. The Equator prize is an international award given to outstanding local efforts along the Equator to reduce poverty through conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The prize is given by the Equator Initiative, a coalition of civil society organisations, businesses, governments and communities, together with the United Nations.

  • Premio Gubbio 2009 (Italy)
    The National Association of Historical-Artistic Centres (Associazione Nazionale
    Centri Storico-Artistici-A.N.C.S.A.) and the City Council of Gubbio announce the
    “Premio Gubbio 2009”. The aim of the Prize is to promote the development of theory and practice concerned with urban regeneration and the conservation of the built heritage. It is open to individuals, local Authorities, public and private sector agencies and universities. In considering the submission, particular account will be given to innovations which are in line with the main goals of A.N.C.S.A., that is the conservation and the active protection of single structures and areas of cultural value at the urban and regional scale. All the papers must be sent by registered mail in sealed envelopes, complete with the address and telephone number of the sender, or delivered by hand, not later than midday of the 31 March 2009.
    These should be undertaken with:
    • a concern for the careful design of projects for the physical, economic and
      social regeneration of our built heritage;
    • an awareness of the links between the operational fields of architecture and planning;
    • proposals that combine the functional, formal and management aspects of interventions.
  • Silver Rose Awards (Brussels)
    SOLIDAR’s Silver Rose Awards were launched in 2000 to help raise the profile of individuals and organisations whose struggles contribute greatly to social justice and equality throughout the world. Winners are sometimes well-known; others are simply ordinary people leading extraordinary lives, reaching out to the most vulnerable groups in their societies, advocating their rights, campaigning for their needs, and providing essential services such as soup kitchens, housing, children’s holidays and literacy classes. As SOLIDAR’s member organisations work on numerous projects with local partners both in Europe and around the world, examples of worthy recipients are not difficult to identify.
  • Winners of the Inaugural Australia ICOMOS Victorian Scholarship
    The 2008 Australia ICOMOS Victorian Scholarships have been awarded to Trudy Rickard and Emma Russell. The scholarship is part of the implementation of the Victorian Government’s strategy Victoria’s Heritage: Strengthening our Communities, and is being awarded for the first time this year. Its purpose is to help build capacity within the heritage industry in Victoria, by supporting participation in recognised heritage conservation courses. Australia ICOMOS is very pleased to have been asked to implement this great initiative of the Victorian Government and Heritage Victoria, and hopes it will be adopted in other States and Territories. The winners of the 2008 scholarship have both shown a deep commitment to working with heritage in Victoria.
    • Trudy Rickard is an architect working in the south west of the state where there are many heritage buildings on the Victorian Heritage Register needing expert care. Trudy has been awarded a scholarship of $3890 to attend the University of Canberra course on Heritage Conservation of Traditional Buildings.
    • Emma Russell is a historian who is undertaking significance assessments of community collections, a rapidly emerging area with a high level of demand. Emma has been awarded a scholarship of $1110 to attend two intensive courses offered by Deakin University Department of Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies, in Collections and Moveable Heritage and in Intangible Heritage.
  • Winners at World Conservation Congress
    Two medals and one honorary membership were awarded at the IUCN World Conservation Congress today. The Harold Jefferson Coolidge Memorial Medal for outstanding contributions to conservation of nature and natural resources was established at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Bangkok in 2004 and awarded for the first time today. The winner, Dr. Robert Goodland, from Canada, was Environmental Advisor to the World Bank Group from 1978 to 2001. He has written numerous books on ecology and environmental science. He is particularly renowned for providing inspiration, encouragement and support to numerous individuals, especially young people, to pursue their careers in conservation...
