Asia Pacific Mural Contest-Bright idea to highlight climate change
(The Filipines)
The sun and its rays drawn as human hands provide a powerful image
of how the world can unite to tackle climate change. Each smiling
face in the cloud symbolizes the ever growing number of people
gaining greater awareness about the issue and how they intend
to address the problem. That was how a group of Ateneo de Manila
University students in the Philippines described their first prize
mural, Let Hands Shine to Breathe Better, under the theme of Action
for Climate Change. The university’s Environmental Science
Society beat 34 entries from six countries in the UNESCO Bangkok
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2008 Asia Pacific
Mural Contest.

SOLIDAR’s Silver Rose Awards were launched in 2000 to help
raise the profile of individuals and organisations whose struggles
contribute greatly to social justice and equality throughout the
world. Winners are sometimes well-known; others are simply ordinary

groups in their societies, advocating their rights, campaigning
for their needs, and providing essential services such as soup
kitchens, housing, children’s holidays and literacy classes.
