Forum UNESCO-University and Heritage (FUUH) is an UNESCO Project for undertaking activities to protect and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage, through an informal networkof higher education institutions. FUUH is under the joint responsibility of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain. This internet website is not an official site of UNESCO but a website created and managed by the UPV within the framework of the project FUUH.

  • The Jean-Paul L'Allier Heritage Prize. Deadline for the reception of the candidacies: April 30, 2009
    This prize is awarded every second year by the Organization of World Heritage Cities to a city that is a member of the OWHC and that has distinguished itself by its achievements in the conservation, enhancement or management of property inscribed on the World Heritage List, and located on its territory. A city that is a member in good standing of the Organization of World Heritage Cities and that has been so for the three preceding years may submit its candidacy to be awarded the Jean-Paul L’Allier Heritage Prize.

  • Eleventh Annual Berkeley Prize Competition 2009 on "Sustainable architecture/traditional wisdom" - Deadline for application: 1 december 2008
    The Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Design Excellence endowment was established in the Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley to promote architecture as a social art through research, writing, and criticism: traditionally under-represented aspects of the architecture curriculum. Each year, the Prize Committee selects a topic important to the understanding of the interaction of people and the built world that becomes the focus of the Essay Competition. This year the topic is: Sustainable Architecture/ Traditional Wisdom. The Committee poses a Question on this website related to the topic. Students enrolled in any undergraduate architecture program throughout the world are invited to submit a 500-word essay proposal responding to the Question.   • Clio 2008 Prize - the excavations of Jean-Pierre Brun in Cumes (Italy)
    As every year, the Clio prize of the French archaeological research abroad will be awarded in the Carrousel of the Louvre next November 6th at 17.30 h. - on the occasion of the Heritage Hall. The first prize, given by a jury of specialists, was assigned to Jean-Pierre Brun by the research conducted in South Italy on the site of the old Cumes. This site, where it is assumed that Eneas received from the sybil the information that allowed him to enter Hell through the very near Averne lake, is loaded with a rich legendary and historical past. Relatively protected from wild urbanism due to its abandonment after the 13th century and the pollution suffered for a long time, the place has witnessed a very long history, initiated from the iron Age, continued through the Greek colonization, the Samnite presence and the establishment of a Roman port which became an important Byzantine position later.

  • Program Coordinator, Cultural Heritage Project
    The Cultural Heritage Project (CHP) in Iraq is designed to focus US and international resources and expertise on rebuilding the professional capabilities of Iraq's museum, heritage and archaeology organizations. The primary objectives of the CHP will implement three key program areas that have definable, tangible, measureable results:
    • the establishment of a new Conservation and Historic Preservation Institute in Erbil to serve preservation and training needs throughout Iraq;
    • the establishment of a professional environment within the Iraq Museum to support its core objectives of preservations, and promotion scholarship; and
    • professional development and capacity building of Iraq's museum and antiquities staff.

    The Project Coordinator will be stationed in Erbil and under the direct authority of the Project Director. The PC will have supervisory responsibilities for Project activity oversight and support the Erbil-based activities and sub-contract staff. The PC will represent IRD in the Project's Erbil area of operations and be directly accountable for quality assurance and adherence to Project implementation schedules.

  • The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia seeks a Director as of July 1, 2009.
    The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of full Professor. SLAIS, located at one of the top research universities in North America, is ALA-accredited and offers PhD and Masters degrees in library and information studies, archival studies, and children’s literature. SLAIS is home to a number of unique research and curriculum initiatives and has successfully attracted significant funding for multidisciplinary and international research projects.
  • Project Director, Cultural Heritage Project
    CHP is a high profile project which will implement three key program areas that have definable, tangible, measureable results: a) the establishment of a new conservation and historic preservation Institute in Erbil to serve preservation and training needs throughout Iraq; b) the establishment of a professional environment within the Iraq Museum to support its core objectives of preservation and promotion of scholarship; and c) professional development and capacity building of Iraq’s museum and antiquities staff. The Project Director position has been established under the project and will be responsible for project management of the CHP activities in-country, be the in-country focal point with Department of State on program matters, and direct the technical aspects of the program including coordination with the project’s academic partners, and oversight of the museum infrastructure rehabilitation activities. The PD will exercise superior project management skills in facilitating the activities the project. The PD will coordinate project partner participation in the technical aspects of the program and provide oversight to their activities. The PD will also be responsible for working with the Government of Iraq officials relevant to the program, US Embassy’s Baghdad based Cultural Affairs Office and Cultural Heritage Officer.

    The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia invites applications for full-time, tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin July 1, 2009. Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate achievement of excellence in research, teaching, and service in an interdisciplinary environment.     Following a recent strategic planning process and in anticipation of our 25th-year anniversary in 2009, the Getty Foundation has revised its funding priorities and strategies in the area of conservation. Our general approach is to shift resources from our ongoing grant categories to more targeted special initiatives focused on a specific issue or region, and carried out in collaboration with the other Getty programs--the Getty Museum, Getty Research Institute, and Getty Conservation Institute...
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science
    The Getty Conservation Institute's Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science is a two-year program. The 2009-2011 fellowship will give particular emphasis to the application of science to some of the conservation issues being posed by modern and contemporary art. The postdoctoral fellow will play an integral role in the GCI's expanding area of Contemporary Art Research that works in collaboration with several external partners to address some of the pressing issues in the field. Existing projects include modern paints, outdoor painted sculpture, contemporary murals, and plastics, and for each of these areas methods are being developed to improve analysis, and to better understand how these materials will change with age and/or conservation treatments. Depending on the experience and expertise of the fellow, he/she may propose to work on one of the existing areas of interest, or to initiate a new project that addresses other areas of concern with modern and contemporary art.
  • Conservation Internships and Fellowships - The Smithsonian Institution - USA
    Fellowships and internships at MCI span a wide variety academic disciplines. Whether the visitor is a fellow in materials science or conservation, or an intern in conservation, there is a common thread that the experience benefits the students' understanding of artifact characterization or preservation. The Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute offers fellowship and internship opportunities involving a variety of artifact analysis, preservation, and conservation treatment specialties. MCI's commitment is to enhance the experience of the fellow or intern, providing specialized technical and scientific training. Such training contributes significantly to the qualifications of the students in their subsequent professional employment.
  • Hermes Fellowships
    Hermes Fellowships were designed to offer young and promising foreign researchers in the humanities and social sciences the chance to be visiting researchers in French universities and research centers. This program is open to researchers from: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and South Africa.
  • The Marc de Montalembert Grant
    Insofar as a candidate is found who satisfies its requirements, the Marc de Montalembert Foundation gives out a scholarship every year. A jury examines the applications and, after deliberation, chooses the winning candidate by March 31 at the latest. The scholarship winner is then invited to come and receive his grant on April 25, the day of the Foundation's opening. By way of example, grants have been given in the following fields: writing, architecture, singing, photography and music. The purpose of the grant is to enable a person under 30 years of age, from a Mediterranean country, to discover other Mediterranean cultures and get a sense of their richness and diversity.

  • Registration deadline for Mondialogo Engineering Award extended till 31 December 2008
    The closing date for registrations in the world’s largest contest for engineering students, the Mondialogo Engineering Award, has been extended to 31 December 2008. Registration for the Award, which is endowed with a total of €300,000 in prize money, can be undertaken on the Mondialogo website (see link). UNESCO and Daimler are holding the contest to promote sustainable solutions for developing countries, with a particular interest in projects that can help poverty eradication, sustainable development and climate change mitigation.

  • National Competition of Poncho and Indigenous fabrics in Bolivia
    In order to encourage and promote textile art in Bolivia, and considering that this art is the means of transmission of knowledge and wisdom of different cultures, the First National Competition of Ponchos and Indigenous Fabrics 2008 was launched, promoted by the Ministry of the Presidency and the Ministry of Education and Cultures of Bolivia through the Viceministry of Development of Cultures. The competition also tries to recover skills of the handcrafted weave practiced by different social groups and transmitted from generation to generation. According to the clauses of the call, all the rural communities like Ayllus and other towns in all the national territory will be able to participate in the Competition

  • Editor-in-Chief, Society for Applied Anthropology
    The Society for Applied Anthropology announces a search for a new Editor-in-Chief of Human Organization, a journal that has been recognized as a leading scientific publication in applied anthropology since its founding in 1941. It is published four times annually and is directed toward interdisciplinary as well as anthropological audiences. The term of the current co-Editor team, David Griffith and Jeff Johnson, ends in December, 2010. The successor’s term will begin on January 1, 2011. The search is being initiated now to provide for a smooth transition. The initial term of service for the new Editor-in-Chief will be three years.   • The John Monash Medal for Engineering Heritage – Awarded to Australia ICOMOS members Margret and Carl Doring
    The award recognises an individual who has made, over a considerable period of time, an outstanding contribution to engineering heritage in Australia through one or more of the following:
    • the raising of awareness of engineering heritage within the profession
    • the promotion of engineering heritage within the community
    • the recording and documentation of engineering heritage
    • the conservation of engineering heritage
    • such other contribution to engineering heritage as Engineering Heritage Australia may consider worthy of recognition.

    The award takes the form of a bronze medal and a certificate, and is made annually. The award is open to any individual and is not limited to engineers or members of Engineers Australia. The first award was made in 2003. Australia ICOMOS congratulates Margret and Carl Doring on being the recipients of this award for 2008. Margret has worked on projects such as the restoration of the Queen Victoria Building and the protection of the Great North Road from damage; Carl has performed in-depth heritage studies of sites including the Tooheys Malthouse, Randwick’s Tramway Workshops and the Midland Railway Workshops.

  • Sophia Labadi is the winner of the Cultural Policy Research Award 2008!
    Dr. Sophia Labadi, a young French international expert on cultural heritage and cultural diversity, is the winner of the Cultural Policy Research Award 2008. This outstanding award, conferred in Lyon last October 16th at the occasion of the ENCATC International Conference "Intercultural Dialogue and Project Management: New training programmes in a context of major challenges", is worth euros 10.000. The prize was awarded jointly by the European Cultural Foundation, the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond in partnership with the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres, ENCATC.
  • Jobs For nature - nature as profession
    On 12, 13 and 14 November, the Forum ''Jobs for nature '' or '' nature as profession'' gathers in Lyon (City of the Congresses) the managers of natural spaces from different European countries. Within the framework of the manifestations of the French Presidency of the European Union, they will share their vision of the realities, the evolution of their offices, and their European dimension. Three topics will be approached mainly during this forum: To obtain a better legibility of the role of the professionals of natural heritage management, and a true recognition; The different ways for the professionalisation of these offices (in particular, initial and permanent training) and Direction, governance and anticipation: the future perspectives.
