Forum UNESCO-University and Heritage (FUUH) is an UNESCO Project for undertaking activities to protect and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage, through an informal networkof higher education institutions. FUUH is under the joint responsibility of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain. This internet website is not an official site of UNESCO but a website created and managed by the UPV within the framework of the project FUUH.

  • From poachers to protectors: Young conservationist honoured
    A Rwandan conservationist who helped turn mountain gorilla poachers into tourism guides has been given an award by the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and the International Ranger Federation. Edwin Sabuhoro, 32, was selected as winner of the 2008 Young Conservationist Award, which honours outstanding achievements by young people in protected areas.
  • IUCN Honours outstanding achievers for protected areas
    Countries around the world have set aside more than 12% of the earth’s land surface as protected areas - a remarkable achievement. Even more remarkable are the efforts of individuals who have worked tirelessly to promote and protect these unique areas, often at great personal risk and danger. IUCN honors such people through the Fred Packard Award – a key award made by IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) to recognize globally outstanding service to protected areas. The following seven outstanding individuals will be recognized at the WCPA Members meeting on 4 October, held prior to the IUCN World Conservation Congress.
  • Web design company to set up the website for the joint programme (and the architectural competition link) - Deadline 28 december 2008
    The Joint Programme “Culture and Heritage for Social and Economic Development” was primarily designed to achieve outcomes derived from the national priorities of Albania that are consistent with the Millennium Development Goals and the One UN programme, approved by the Albanian Government in October 2007. Sectoral priorities for culture and culture-related issues in Albania focus predominantly on rehabilitating cultural monuments, with a secondary priority for leveraging Albania’s culture as a tourist attraction. Joint programme outcomes were designed to expand these two concerns to meet wider development objectives.

  • Clio II Prize - Archeology of landscape on the Guyana coast
    The archeology of the Amazonia remained unknown for a long time, to the point that it was certain that this hostile forest region had been only occupied by primitive or residual groups, some of which could have been expelled from the most favorable Andean heights by the carriers of higher civilizations developed on the plateau. Immense works are open then, on which North American, English, German, and also French work around Stephan Rostain who has studied for twenty-five years the known archaeological vestiges on the Guyana coasts, at the same time as the evolution of its landscape…
  • 5th Loire-Bretagne water awards
    Held by the Loire-Bretagne water authority, the 2009 water awards will reward the best initiatives in the field of the preservation of water and aquatic environments. They will reward exemplary initiatives undertaken between 2006 and 2008 by local authorities, industry, farm businesses or charities, in the fields of:
    • the coherent management of purification in a rural or urban environment; - water management in industry;
    • the mitigation of diffuse agricultural pollution and protection of water resources;
    • saving water;
    • the management of watercourses and natural aquatic environments;
    • innovative awareness-raising and partnership initiatives relating to water and aquatic environments.

    Candidacies must be registered with the water authority by 16 March 2009 and the awards ceremony will be held on 8 October 2009 in Orléans.

Responsibilities: Direction of the Department of Preservation and Conservation; supervisory responsibility for the conservation and preservation of the collection of approximately 650,000 works (prints, oil sketches, drawings, miniatures, illuminated manuscripts and illustrated books from the Middle Ages to the present day); development of working programmes and realisation of complex preservation and treatment measures as well as their scientific documentation and publication; development and supervision of research projects; preservation support of exhibitions and loans as well as guidance and supervision of interns.
  • Archive and Public Culture: Graduate and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Research Associateships: January 2009
    In January 2009 we will be inviting applications for graduate (Hons, Masters. Doctoral) and postdoctoral fellowships linked to the UCT-based NRF Chair in Archive and Public Culture. Other forms of research associateship are also available to scholars working in this area. Applicants for the graduate fellowships will be expected to register for graduate degrees in the discipline of their choice and may be co-supervised by the NRF chair and a discipline –based supervisor. Post-doctoral fellows and other research associates will be linked directly to the research-focus area, located in the department of Social Anthropology. While disciplinary bases constitute the foundation of the research undertaken, trans-disciplinary endeavours are actively supported within the research focus. An emphasis is placed on facilitating researchers’ engagement with cutting-edge critical developments locally and internationally in the epistemology and methodologies of archive.

  • 2010 Watch nominations are now being accepted – deadline for nominations is 15 March 2009
    The World Monuments Watch calls international attention to cultural heritage around the world that is threatened by the forces of nature and society. From archaeological sites to iconic architecture, cultural landscapes to historic city centres, the Watch identifies places of significance in need of timely action. Every two years, WMF accepts new nominations to the Watch, from which 100 are selected for listing. Watch listing provides an opportunity for sites and their nominators to raise public awareness, foster local participation, advance innovation and collaboration, and demonstrate effective solutions. The Watch nomination process also serves as a vehicle for requesting World Monuments Fund (WMF) assistance for select projects. More than 500 sites from over 110 countries have benefited from the seven cycles of the Watch; nearly half of these have received WMF grants, totalling $50 million.

    The work and achievements of Ann Webster Smith as a champion in building a global culture of protection for the cultural heritage of the entire world were prolific and varied. For three decades Ms Smith was at the very core of the dreamers and doers who nurtured ICOMOS to its maturity, personifying a spirit of cooperation and teamwork.

  • The Prince's of Wales's Graduate Fellowship in Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism
    Following the success of the first year of The Prince's of Wales's Graduate Fellowship in Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism in 2008, applications are now being considered for the 2009 round of Fellowships. The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment have six, fully-funded, two-year Fellowships which are based for one year at the offices of The Prince's Foundation in Shoreditch, central London, and for one year at the offices of a partner architectural firm. Candidates for this programme must be graduates of an accredited programme in architecture, urban design, planning, landscape architecture or a related discipline, and must demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of the principles of sustainable urbanism and a commitment to tackling the ecological challenge.   • UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi (Japan) Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships Programme
    2009 Cycle - With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in “people building the next era”, 20 fellowships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.   • Béthanie Wins UNESCO Heritage Award
    Béthanie - the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Landmark Heritage Campus has been awarded an Honourable Mention at the 2008 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Awards. An award presentation ceremony will take place on 9 December 2008 at the Béthanie campus. Officiating guests include Ms Béatrice Kaldun, UNESCO's China representative for Culture and Heritage; Mrs Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development; Professor Leung Nai-kong, Council Chairman of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; Professor Kevin Thompson, Director of the Hong Kong academy for Performing Arts; and Professor Anna Pao Sohmen, Chairman of the Academy's Béthanie Advisory Group.

  • Scholarships for Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions
    Applications for the Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions, approved and financially sponsored by the European Commission within the framework of the Erasmus Mundus Programme, have just opened. This Master Course is organized by a Consortium of leading European Universities/Research Institutions in the field, composed by University of Minho (coordinating institution, Portugal), the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic), the University of Padua (Italy) and the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic). The course combines the most recent advances in research and development with practical applications. A significant number of scholarships, ranging from 4000 to 21000 Euro, are available to students of any nationality. The Consortium is also available to host outstanding third-country scholars who are interested in contributing to the Master Course Programme. Interested third-country scholars may receive scholarships for teaching and research activities for a period of up to three months.
  • 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation – call for entries
    Entries are now being accepted for the 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation. The awards programme, in its tenth year, recognizes the achievement of individuals and organizations within the private sector, and public-private initiatives, in successfully restoring structures of heritage value in the Asia-Pacific region. The deadline for receipt of materials is 31 March 2009.

  • VACANCY NOTICE - UNDP-MDG-F PROGRAMME COORDINATOR FOR "The China Culture and Development Partnership Framework" - DEADLINE 14 December 20008
    Please be informed that the post of Programme Coordinator (ALD- P3) of the MDG-F Joint Programme “The China Culture and Development Partnership Framework” approved under the Thematic Window on Culture and Development of the UNDP/Spain Achievement Fund, is opened for application on the UNDP website. UNESCO Beijing has informed us that while the initial deadline of application was 7 December, UNDP intends to extend it until 14 December 2008. Moreover, it is also intended to modify the requirement regarding the level of Chinese from “fluency” to “working knowledge would be an additional asset”.   • Rolex Awards to Talal Akasheh (Jordan) for Project "Protecting Petra - One at a Time"
    Petra, a 2,500-year-old city in Jordan, is one of the world’s most revered cultural sites. But time and tourism are taking their toll on its monuments, carved into sandstone cliffs. Chemistry professor Talal Akasheh, who has devoted 26 years to documenting Petra scientifically, is set to complete a knowledge system that will underpin the city’s future conservation.
  • 2009 Marc de Montalembert Grant for a Cultural Project in the Mediterranean - Deadline for submission: 31 December
    Insofar as a candidate is found who satisfies its requirements, the Marc de Montalembert Foundation gives out a scholarship every year. A jury examines the applications and, after deliberation, chooses the winning candidate by March 31 at the latest. The scholarship winner is then invited to come and receive his grant on April 25, the day of the Foundation's opening. By way of example, grants have been given in the following fields: writing, architecture, singing, photography and music. The purpose of the grant is to enable a person under 30 years of age, from a Mediterranean country, to discover other Mediterranean cultures and get a sense of their richness and diversity.

  • Winners of SCA-CICOP (International Center for Heritage Conservation) Awards
    The award, organized by the Central Society of Architects - SCA- and the International Center for Heritage Conservation - CICOP-, culminated last Monday 17 November 2008, with the public exhibition of the works and the delivery of the corresponding certificates.
