Leonardo’s
garden – Leonardo da Vinci and Nature
True to its mission to promote knowledge of Leonardo da Vinci, in
June 2008 the Château du Clos Lucé - Parc Leonardo
da Vinci opened “Leonardo’s Garden”. Laid out
over a hectare in a unique marshland setting, this landscaped walking
site reproduces and brings together the master’s studies and
works on botany, geology and water movements. Designed as an open-air
museum somewhere between earth and sky, this new space has been
developed to leave no trace in its marshland ecosystem and its remarkable
biotope, characteristics of the wetland areas on the banks of the
Loire. New life has been breathed into the landscapes of Leonardo
da Vinci in a landscaped natural site which is open to visitors.

Books
for Delft University - The Netherlands
On 13 May 2008 the Faculty of Architecture of Delft University of
Technology in the Netherlands completely burned down and is at present
being demolished. Fortunately no lives were lost nor was anybody
injured. The Faculty housed, among others, the Institute of History
of Art, Architecture and Urbanism (IHAAU), that lost more than 600
running meters of books, about 5000 volumes, as well as about 40,000
slides. IHAAU was one of the largest and oldest research centres
of the history of art, architecture and town planning in the Netherlands,
as well as a teaching centre for thousands of students of architecture
annually. Prof. Dr. Franziska Bollerey, Head of IHAAU, would be
grateful if individual or institutional members of FUUH could support
in a reconstruction of IHAAU by donating books and journals.

UNESCO
roundtable on the development, culture and identity of indigenous
peoples
An estimated 350 million indigenous peoples live in over 70 countries
and speak more than 5,000 languages: such is the importance of indigenous
people today. Their cultures express the powerful links between
humanity and nature, between tradition and modernity, offering a
holistic view of the world. They could become a source of renewal
for the future. Despite their major contribution to cultural diversity
and to sustainable development, many of them are marginalized and
deprived of basic human rights.

Dry
stone, sustainable practice for our territories
Since 1998, different research programs associated the Geo-material
Laboratory of Public Works of the National School of the State of
Lyon (ENTPE) to craftsmen from Vaucluse, Gard and Lozère.
Since then they provide scientific testing on the interest in recovering
and carrying out this technical option for the containment walls:
highways, ways, terraces, gardens… On October 16,
2008, at 2.00pm, at the ENTPE of Lyon, a promotion event
will take place. We will present this Guide and we will also propose
the signature of the Manifesto for the use of dry stone masonry. |

UNESCO-PCCP
Water and Conflict Resolution Series publishes book “Water and
Peace for the People – Possible solutions to water disputes
in the Middle East” Dr. Jon Martin Trondalen
ISBN: 978-92-3-104086-3
Year: 2008
The book proposes practical and objective solutions to the entrenched
water conflicts in the Middle East. The author reveals and clarifies
the complexity of water conflicts, drawing on years of experience
facilitating and chairing water negotiations in the region. The publication
of this book follows the objective of UNESCO’s PCCP Programme:
it facilitates multi-level and interdisciplinary dialogue in order
to foster peace, co-operation and development in the management of
shared water resources. The bottom line of the book is: Unless the
countries involved co-operate, the consequences will be devastating.
The lack of plentiful and clean water for the people will not only
result in severe human suffering, but could also have grave geopolitical
consequences. |

Voluntary
service, the Commission proposes to promote the mobility of young
people
The Commission proposed, last July, an initiative aimed at offering
young people still more possibilities of voluntary service in Europe.
Young people willing to carry out voluntary activities in another
member State have no possibilities at the moment. The Commission
presents a proposal that respects the diversity of the systems of
the existing voluntary service in Europe and reinforces its interoperativity
and its accessibility to volunteers from other countries of the
Union…

Aids
to cultural mobility in Europe and the Mediterranean
On the occasion of the meeting held last June 12, in Marseilles,
for the professionals of Culture, ADCEI had proposed such document.
Far from trying to be exhaustive, the product of this research gathers
and presents a series of aids to cultural mobility at the European
and the Mediterranean level. This document is expected to be completed
progressively by means of the discovery of other devices. Therefore,
we invite you to participate in this enrichment by letting us know
any other aid that does not appear in our study. In thisn way, we
will be able to regularly inform you of the new features included
in the document.

discuss how to extend ERASMUS´success
How can we extend the success of Erasmus, the EU's flagship
programme in higher education, beyond the confines of the university
sector? This was the question put to a Commission-appointed High-Level
Expert Forum on Mobility, whose report was published on July 10th.
It recommends expanding greatly the opportunities for learning mobility
offered, not just to students, but to young people in general including,
for instance, apprentices as well as young entrepreneurs and artists.
The report, entitled "Making Learning Mobility an Opportunity
for All", is a result of six months' reflection on how to create
more opportunities for mobility of young people between EU Member
States...
