• Ratification by Uganda of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (Paris, 17 October 2003)
  On 13 May 2009, Uganda deposited with the Director-General its instrument of ratification of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. In accordance with the terms of its Article 34, the aforementioned Convention will enter into force with respect to Uganda three months after the date of the deposit of this instrument, that is to say on 13 August 2009.

• Director-General meets members of the subsidiary body of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
  On Friday 15 May 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura held an informal meeting with members of the subsidiary body of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) established to examine nominations to the Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

• The Director-General hosts the 15th session of the intergovernmental Committee for the promotion of the return of cultural properties to their country of origin
  On May 11, 2009, at the UNESCO’s Headquarters, Director-General of UNESCO , Koïchiro Matsuura, hosted the 15th session of the intergovernmental Committee for the promotion of the return of cultural properties to their country of origin or their restitution in case of illegal appropriation.

• Accession by Qatar to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (Paris, 20 October 2005)
  On 21 April 2009, Qatar deposited with the Director-General its instrument of accession to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. In accordance with the terms of its Article 29, the aforementioned Convention will enter into force with respect to Qatar three months after the date of the deposit of its instrument, that is to say on 21 July 2009.

• Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property meeting at UNESCO
  The Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in Case of Illicit Appropriation will hold its 15th session at UNESCO Headquarters (room XII), from 11 to 13 May. The three cases pending before the Committee will be up for further discussion.: the famous Parthenon Marbles, presently in the British Museum and claimed by Greece; the Hittite Sphinx of Bogazköy, involving Turkey and Germany; and the Makonde Mask claimed from Switzerland by Tanzania.

• Ratification by Austria of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (Paris, 17 October 2003)
  On 9 April 2009, Austria deposited with the Director-General its instrument of ratification of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. In accordance with the terms of its Article 34, the aforementioned Convention will enter into force with respect to Austria three months after the date of the deposit of this instrument, that is to say on 9 July 2009.

• Ratification by Bosnia and Herzegovina of the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (Paris, 2 November 2001)
  On 22 April 2009, Bosnia and Herzegovina deposited with the Director-General its instrument of ratification of the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. In accordance with the terms of its Article 27, the aforementioned Convention will enter into force with respect to Bosnia and Herzegovina three months after the date of the deposit of this instrument, that is to say on 22 July 2009.
