  • Parks Canada Discovery Centre in Québec
The new Parks Canada Discovery Centre will open its doors to the public in the summer 2010. An exhibit entitled “Moving with the River” will tell the story of the millions of travellers from near and far who passed through Québec City, inspired by the dream of a new life in Canada. The exhibit will present key events that marked the early days of settlement. Visitors will discover that it was truly here, along the banks of the mighty St. Lawrence, that the country was born. Visitors will learn about the land of the First Nations peoples, the 1603 treaty as recounted by Champlain, the destiny of the “Filles du roi”, and the history of Québec City, the gateway to North America for generations of immigrants.

  • Submission to the Productivity Commission Study of the Contribution of the Not for Profit Sector (Australia) 10 June 2009
The Collections Council of Australia has made a submission to the Study of the Contribution of the Not for Profit Sector, presently being conducted by the Productivity Commission. The CCA’s submission describes the diversity and breadth of the collections sector, and considers collections in the context of a conceptual framework for measuring the not for profit sector that has been proposed by the Productivity Commission. The submission highlights inadequacies in the available data about the number and nature of collecting organisations in Australia, and points out the contribution of a highly skilled volunteer workforce in this sector. It also provides examples of social capital, research and other benefits of collections. The CCA also recommends increased funding for the digitisation of collections, which would make them more broadly accessible to the community. Improved digitisation opportunities would also prepare the sector to make full use of the Government’s recently announced National Broadband Network.
  • New exhibition: "CAPTURED: Freo Prison 1991"
This new exhibition features black and white photographs shot inside Fremantle Prison five months before its closure. Photographer Karin Calvert-Borshoff was contracted by the State Government to document the facility and its customs before it was decommissioned. Calvert-Borshoff had unprecedented access to restricted locations and prisoners inside Western Australia’s maximum security prison. These arresting images reveal a glimpse into the stark conditions of Fremantle Prison, an archaic institution long overdue for closure. Calvert-Borshoff captures inmates, prison officers and non uniformed staff in their daily routines. Featuring some 100 images from the Fremantle Prison Collection, Captured presents a powerful record of the social history of the prison. Curator: Sandra Murray

  • Director-General participates in the inauguration of the New Acropolis Museum in Athens

  • Exhibition: "Planète métisse : to mix or not to mix"
From March 18th 2008 to July 19th 2009. Musée du quai Branly, Paris (France)
The idea of métissage takes account of the contact between peoples and traditions, of the coexistence of mixed identities, and reflects ways of bridging the gaps between different cultures. The Planète métisse exhibition aims to stimulate the visitor's imagination by juxtaposing objects along the way, from the 15th century to the present day. It analyses the repercussions of European, mainly Iberian, expansion on the other civilisations and the exchange of influences between East and West in the wake of the great expansions, notably the Chinese and Muslim. This exhibition of cross cultural objects and arts highlights the richness of artistic productions stemming from the blending of ways of doing and believing, of creating and designing.

  • Exhibition: Tarzan! in the museum
16 June - 27 September 2009. Musée du quai Branly. Paris (France) - Commissioner : Roger BOULAY
This exhibition dedicated to an icon of popular culture allows the public to discover how the hero was created and decipher the myth that he embodies. Although Edgar Rice Burroughs is the father of the Tarzan character, all those who used him in comics, film , posters, models, records, games , etc refer to collective images and representations that are at the roots of one of our century’s strongest myth. The exhibition looks at the origins and nature of Tarzan, as a character as well as a myth (from Saturnin Farandoul, a 1914 documentary, to Greystoke in 1983), and redefines the character as a modern hero fighting for the protection of nature.

  • (in French) Ouverture du nouveau musée René Magritte - Bruxelles (Belgique)
  • MUSM7010: Vietnam Field School (University of Queensland, Australia) - International Field School in Museums & Sustainable Heritage Development. 3-22 December 2009. Vietnam
The International Field School in Museums and Sustainable Heritage Development offered by the Museum Studies Program at UQ aims to provide first-hand experience to graduate students and Professional Development Program participants in locating culture in sustainable development in a rapidly globalising world. Museums and heritage places kinds are considered in the context of sustainable economic, environmental and social development, with a focus on documented case studies and real-life examples in Vietnam. Participants will consider how museums, cultural institutions, and heritage tourism can play a role in the revitalization of local culture and economy, and how international conventions for heritage protection, governance structures, and local area planning intersect within holistic heritage management frameworks. The course provides a critical introduction to cultural mapping, gender and youth issues in community engagement, poverty alleviation and Millennium Development Goals. It also examines the challenges posed by the conflicts between conservation and development, particularly in World Heritage Areas.

ISBN: 978-84-9704-430-1

The book Didáctica del Patrimonio: epistemología, metodología y estudio de casos by Roser Calaf, published by Trea, Gijón, 2009, focuses on heritage as object of knowledge. Its central theme is the dialogue between school and museum. Knowledge as construct is directly linked to interpretation procedures and the way we learn in heritage places and in classrooms.
In the first part of the book, the theoretical discussion draws its concepts from philosophy (Michel Foucault), pedagogy (Dewey, Freire), communication (Umberto Eco) and museology.
The second part of the book is devoted to methodology and evaluation which follow qualitative and quantitative stands.
The third part contains case studies of different examples of educational programmes in important museums (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Museum of Civilizations of Québec in Canada, Pointe à Calière in Québec, Mac Cord Museum in Montréal) and in museums relevant locally, like Muja (Museo del Jurásico en Asturias, Spain) and Museo de la Escuela Rural also in Asturias, Spain.
Roser Calaf, compares, verifies, imagines and creates enticing daring proposals which bare the imprint of her life experience. This volume is the seventh in the series published by Trea between 2003 and 2008 devoted to heritage and education. The whole series has been edited by Ms. Calaf and Olaia Fontal. The latter's doctoral thesis was supervised by Ms. Calaf, and published by the same publisher in 2003.
