  • 7 sins. When the Museum speaks to the Devil!
A exhibition with the distinguishing signature of the Museum from 14 October 2009 to 17 October 2010
Wells is a miserly little man. Old Stanislas is choleric. Janvier is envious. Baba Ghannouj is greedy. Thérèse was clogged in lust. Armand is proud. And the King of the lazybones is… lazy. Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, , , … Still today, although the society of Quebec was considerably liberated of the doctrine taught during decades by the clergy and professors, the seven deadly sins conserve their hateful reputation nevertheless. But what a nice excuse to carry out an exhibition that valorizes, in a very original way, the national collections whose Museum of the civilization zealously keeps. Thus, the Museum chose to tempt the devil by entrusting seven narrators from Quebec the mission to imagine a story inspired by one of the seven capital sins and to illustrate their story by means of objects extracted from its collections. With the support of approximately 250 objects - from all the periods and without distinction of sectors -, each story takes life, according to a representation by Martin Larocque. Here we have know how that fits perfectly with the Museum of the civilization!

  • Ghosts in the museum, an online adventure: are you a good detective?
The Museum of Civilization proposes an activity between game and pedagogical activity: “Ghost in the museum”. In order to discover ethnographic and historical museums, rather boring for young people little interested in the past, the museum has created an investigation activity where participants must solve a series of enigmas that will allow them to obtain the keys to recover the missing devices. The enigmas have different degrees of difficulty and most of them involve navigating and reading different documents. All this is created in Flash in a very artistic way. In summary, a good work that should arrive in classrooms with the blessing of managers, parents and professors… Under one sole condition… not being scared of ghosts.

  • (in French) Antiquités mexicaines - regards sur l’archéologie du Mexique...
29 octobre 2009.

  • Ottoman Paris in the National City of the History of Immigration
The Turkish presence in France is ancient, since the 15th century, by means of the diplomatic relations of France with the Ottoman Empire or through the presence of Turkish high dignitaries, intellectuals and artists who were influenced by the French culture and ideas. Similarly, the fashion of “turqueries” supplies the attractiveness of the French for the East. Paris is then the theatre of this Ottoman presence which will leave lasting traces in the architectural heritage.
    • Moderated by Gaye Petek (Elele), with Gilles Veinstein (Collège de France - EHESS) and François Georgeon (CNRS - EHESS).
    • Projection of the short film “Paris of the young Turks” by François Georgeon and Philippe Kergraine (2008).

  • Exhibition: “Black trade and slavery: the passage”
    3 October 2009 - 3 January 2010. Nantes (France)
The museum inaugurates a new cycle of conferences proposed for one season: the “History of the Castle Conferences”. The first ones are dedicated to black slave trade, historical sequence which is strongly represented in the museum. Indeed, on the occasion of a research work carried out by the team of Conservation on the Marie- Séraphique, slave trade ship that has become emblematic of the triangular commerce of Nantes, the topic of the passage is brought to light and developed this fall. The tour around the museum rooms, conferences, projection-debate, guided tours, musical readings, by the theatre company Lune Rousse, readings by mediators, evoke the development of slave trade campaigns and the transport of captives from the African coasts to the colonies.

This group includes people who have reduced or no mobility, intellectual comprehension, vision or hearing. The workshop, mainly focussing on the needs of people who have special visual, hearing and cognitive needs, will raise awareness of the programmes and lines of action of the museums we work in to offer the necessary tools and resources to bring art closer to everyone, making it truly accessible.
