  • Animal Mummies
In 1888 an Egyptian farmer digging in the sand near the village of Istabl Antar uncovered a mass grave. The bodies weren't human. They were feline—ancient cats that had been mummified and buried in pits in staggering numbers. "Not one or two here and there," reported the English Illustrated Magazine, "but dozens, hundreds, hundreds of thousands, a layer of them, a stratum thicker than most coal seams, ten to twenty cats deep." Some of the linen-wrapped cats still looked presentable, and a few even had gilded faces. Village children peddled the best specimens to tourists for change; the rest were sold in bulk as fertilizer. One ship hauled about 180,000, weighing some 38,000 pounds, to Liverpool to be spread on the fields of England.

  • The different languages of archaeology
Guylaine DARTEVELLE, through an original itinerary, trained in studying of Middle Age literary texts and learning ancient languages, she nears herself to the history of art and more specifically archaeology, by studying, in her PhD thesis, monumental architecture. Her concern for confrontation leads her to test her knowledge with pedagogical experiences, thanks to which she attempts to give a discursive place to images (Organising and performing exhibitions, heritage and thematic surveys). Today in her works, she prevails a transversall analysis of the archaeology of knowledge and cultural identities, at the crossroads of places and their utopias (heterotypic archaeologies). In situ, in search for the footprints of the units of the discourse, the archaeologist continues passing the boundaries of memory.
Guylaine DARTEVELLE is historian of art and archaeology, founding vice-president and researcher to the European Institute of economic and financial memory: Economy Art Culture (IMEF).

  • Collapse of ancient water system in northern Iraq forces tens of thousands to abandon their homes, UNESCO study finds
Over 100,000 people in northern Iraq have abandoned their homes since 2005 because of severe water shortages, a UNESCO study finds. Drought and excessive well pumping have drawn down aquifer levels in the region, causing a dramatic decline of water flow in ancient underground aqueducts, known in Iraq as karez, upon which hundreds of communities depend. The study is the first to document the effects of the ongoing drought on the karez systems, which thousands of Iraqis have depended upon for centuries for their drinking water and farming needs.

  • A further step towards the preservation and enhancement of the Mediterranean's audiovisual heritage
Organised and hosted by Rai, this training is part of a training cycle that will provide television technicians with the opportunity to digitise their archives and regularly nourish Mem-Med’s website with important audiovisual documents. From 2011 onward, the collected material will be available to the public. The objective of the training consisted of the presentation, the installation and the use of the digitisation station and software tailored to the project. Beyond the unilateral transfer of skills, the uniformity of the profiles and experience in the computer field of the technicians and of the managers of these archives have helped to initiate a common reflection on the process of digitisation and of common needs in this domain.

  • Declaration and Policy on Architecture and Sustainability
Recognising that coordinated and well-considered action in the construction sector can play a big part in the fight against the effects of climate change, the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) launched its Declaration and Policy on Architecture and Sustainability at a Seminar in Brussels on the 24th of September 2009. The ACE Declaration and Policy on Architecture and Sustainability contains, among other things, concrete goals and commitments that the architectural profession can undertake in order to ensure that our built environment is both sustainable and of high quality. In the coming years it is expected that the architectural profession will play a more and more prominent role in these issues in order to safeguard the future for future generations and to ensure a high quality of life for all in the EU where nearly 80% of the population already live in urbanised areas. As a result of on-going contacts between The Ename Center and the Spanish Research Group on Materiality, Archaeology and Heritage (MAP) of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain), one of MAP’s researchers, Victor M. Lopez-Menchero, got the opportunity to come to Ename for a 3-month stay. And he sure is enjoying the experience: ‘It is a great honour to share knowledge with other European researchers in one of the world’s most prestigious research centres in Public Archaeology and Heritage Presentation.’ Increasing international competition as well as the need to build a common European research area require universities and research centres across Europe to promote the exchange of knowledge and staff. Victor M. Lopez-Menchero prepares a Phd on the in situ interpretation and presentation of archaeological heritage in Spain. He also participates in different international projects on the integral management of archaeological heritage and virtual archaeology.

A mud-caked object unearthed from an old drain has caused much head-scratching and brainstorming at South Hobart’s Cascades Female Factory. The mystery artefact, from the collection of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, complemented a collection of interesting family heirlooms brought to a community event by the factory’s neighbours and friends. Beautiful Victorian jewellery, silk programs from the Royal Hobart Regatta, coins discovered in a shipwreck and a letter written from the trenches of France in 918 were among the items produced by the visitors. Arts Tasmania Roving Curator Jai Paterson was on hand to show how to care for the prized and delicate objects.

  • Colebrookdale on road to recovery. Tasmania (Australia)
A sandstone farm building on the historic property of Colebrookdale at Campania, in Tasmania’s south-east, was on the verge of falling when current owners Rob and Libby Sloane decided to repair it. “We bought Colebrookdale in 2007 with the intention of restoring the main weatherboard farmhouse. Part of the attraction was two heritage listed sandstone outbuildings, although the smaller one was barely standing,” Dr Sloane said. “It was only partly covered by an iron roof. There were no gutters or downpipes, and in some places the existing roofing iron did not extend beyond the outside of the walls. Water damage and livestock had made the stonework unstable. The front wall was little more than a collapsed pile of rubble, and the northern side had a serious lean and a major structural fault which required partial re-building. It had at some time been used as a chook shed and rats had undermined the remnant flagstone floor,” Dr Sloane said.

  • Heritage Alert: Stockholm City Library, Stockholm (Sweden)
In 2007, the winning design of an architectural competition for an extension to the Gunnar Asplund designed Stockholm City Library was announced. The heritage significance of the library building and its annexes are theoretically protected by a range of Swedish laws, but it is considered that the winning design would have serious adverse impacts on the heritage of the Asplund Library complex. The proposed size of the new buildings would overwhelm the library and the original monumental main entrance would loose its function, thereby diminishing the power of Asplund's original design. The proposed demolition of the three annexes would destroy the overall experience of the site as originally planned and designed by Asplund.

  • International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar (Croatia): New Website
Underwater archaeology in the Republic of Croatia has made considerable progress in the last couple of years and a high quality system for survey, research and protection of underwater archaeology sites and finds is being implemented. From now on, the focal point of these activities will be the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar (ICUA). This new Centre was opened in September 2007 as an organizational unit of the Croatian Conservation Institute, a scientific and professional institution founded by the Republic of Croatia. In January 2009 the Centre was legally recognized as an independent institution, although it will stay closely linked to Croatian Conservation Institute. The decision to establish the Centre was based on the fact that Croatia was among the first countries to ratify the UNESCO’s Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage from 2001. That was the reason for UNESCO to accept the Croatian initiative to proclaim the Centre in Zadar as a regional centre (category 2) under the auspices of UNESCO.

Moscow Heritage at Crisis Point (2nd edition)
Co-published by SAVE Europe’s Heritage, the Moscow Architecture Preservation Society (MAPS) and Docomomo International
Buildings under threat include internationally famous landmarks: the Bolshoi Theater, Mayakovskaya Metro Station, Monuments of the avant-garde, plus buildings that are an inseparable part of Moscow’s identity like Children’s World Department Store and the Central House of Artists. The report is a follow up to the 2007 report, a bombshell that focused national and international attention on the crisis that Moscow’s heritage is undergoing. Despite the successes of the report, including the listing of three buildings, the destruction continues. The new report details the changes of the last two years—what new losses the city has suffered, which buildings are under continuing or new threat, why this is happening, and also outlines the path for a more sustainable future for the city.
This new report from SAVE Europe’s Heritage and the Moscow Architectural Preservation Society (MAPS), with support from Docomomo International, condemns the losses while illustrating the astonishing range of historic building in Moscow, from medieval churches to elegant postwar modernism—all threatened by the furious pace of redevelopment of the city by a coterie of property developers during the tenure of Mayor Yury Luzhkov.

The Comenius Project EuroCoMi-Europe, a continent of migrants, has been launched in the year 2006 by four initial teacher training institutes of Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Poland with the main task of promoting a competence-oriented teaching of history with a European perspective. The booklet, Europe, a continent of migrants - A multiperspective approach to teaching history of human mobility, edited by Umberto Baldocchi, is the main outcome of the project, intends to encourage the readers to apply new methodologies, aiming at fostering multiperspectivity and at developing a real historical thinking, which are two basic key competences for life in a democratic society.

Pas de Grenelle pour Valois - Bon Anniversaire M. Malraux. Edition Paris Carnets Nord
Claude Patriat
ISBN : 9782355360343

« CULTURE(S) n. f.

Pluralising Pasts - Heritage, Identity and Place in Multicultural Societies
Gregory Ashworth, Brian Graham, and John Tunbridge
Pluto Press, October 2007
ISBN: 978-0-7453-2285-8

The heritage industry is big business. From museums and the preservation of old buildings to broader questions of community and identity, heritage is now a political issue. This book explores what heritage means and how it is used to encourage people to identify with particular places and 'traditions'. The authors show how contemporary societies use heritage in the creation and management of collective identities and, most especially, the different ways in which it is involved with the questions of multicultural societies. The resources that are poured into heritage mean that questions of identity are widely discussed at a policy level: what does it mean to be American or British, or a minority in any society? This book shows how heritage is used politically and commercially to shape the ways people represent themselves, and are represented, in diverse and hybrid societies.

Del olvido a la mémoria
Produced in collaboration with the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the National Museum of the country, this collection includes a five volumes series of teaching materials that are part of an initiative of Central America countries to eliminate the ignorance about the influence of populations of African descent in the region. The Umayyads. The Rise of Islamic Art
ISBN: 1-874044-35-X
This book is available in Arab, Español, Français, Italiano.
Far from abolishing the freedom of local cults and undermining existing town plans, The Umayyads acknowledged the aesthetic language already in place on their arrival in Jordan (661), and re-invented its forms with an astonishing freedom of expression. Brief as their hegemony was (less than 90 years) the role of the Umayyad caliphs remains crucial in the history of Islam. By establishing the first crossroads between the two blocs of the Muslim world (Iran–Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean), they brought the richness of the two civilisations to a re-united Middle East. The Umayyads were passionate architects and most of the art forms in which they have excelled (mosaic, stucco, frescoes and figurative sculpture) are, therefore, linked to architecture. Although they borrowed a number of motifs from the inexhaustible Antique repertoire, the architecture, as much as the decorative arts, clearly prefigure the artistic expressions of a later Islam.

Sinculo-Norman Art
ISBN: 1-874044-40-6
This book is available in English, Français, Deutsch, Italiano.
Sicily was won from the Aghlabids in 827 and passed to the Fatimids in 948. The Norman Conquest of 1061 finally ousted the Muslims from the Island. Organised into three administrative valla – Val di Mazara, Val di Noto, Val Demone – Islamic Sicily produced singularly imaginative crafts and many religious and civic buildings, resurrecting some Byzantine canons, at times still heavily tainted with a late Antique resonance. The Norman monarchy knew how to incorporate, in an innovative and quite manifest way, the contributions of Islamic art. A myriad of monuments attributed to Roger II and William II were enhanced with these elaborate symbioses. The beauty of these sometimes leave us short of adequate words to describe the magnificent palaces and pleasure houses, the luxuriant gardens, and the refined marbles and glowing mosaics produced at this time when Norman kings lived in these surroundings as emirates.

L'Art Mudéjar
ISBN: 2-7449-0172-5
