- Dive
into the oceans with Google Earth
Very little is known about oceans. That’s why very little
- less than one percent - of the Earth’s oceans are protected,
compared to 12 percent of the land surface. ‘Ocean in Google
Earth’, launching today, lets virtual voyagers find out
what marine species live where and discover marine protected areas,
one of the best tools for protecting our oceans. Internet users
can now travel in 3D through the vast and largely unknown underwater
world of the planet’s oceans, allowing visitors to fly over
and around underwater seamounts or follow scientific research
expeditions as they mine the depths of the oceans for new species
and discoveries.

Publication - IUCN Guidelines for applying protected area management
categories
Dudley, Nigel, ed.
ISBN 978-2-8317-1086-0
IUCN’s Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify
protected areas according to their management objectives, are today
accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording and classifying
protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as
the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result,
they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation.
These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the
meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition
of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and
management approaches. |

GÉOCARREFOUR
Nº82 Nº 4.

Publication on Protected Landscapes and Cultural and Spiritual Values
This is the second volume in the new series on the Values of Protected
Landscapes and Seascapes produced by the Protected Landscapes Task
Force of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA).
In launching the series early in 2008, we explained the rationale
behind protected landscapes: some lived-in landscapes are so important
for conservation and sustainable development that they deserve special
protection and IUCN has recognised such landscapes in which effective
national or local conservation measures are already in place as Category
V protected areas: Protected Landscape and Seascapes. |

Fluctuations
of Glaciers (prepared by the World Glacier Monitoring Service - WGMS)
The series 'Fluctuations of Glaciers' (FoG), prepared by the World
Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), continuously publishes internationally
collected, standardised data on changes in glaciers throughout the
world at 5-yearly intervals.
The objective of the publication is to reproduce a global set of
data which:
- affords a general view of the changes,
- encourages more extensive measurements,
- invites further processing of the results,
- facilitates consultation of the further sources, and
- serves as a basis for research.
This standardised data set should be regarded as a working tool
for the scientific community, especially concerning the fields of
glaciology, climatology, hydrology, and quaternary geology.
