signs an agreement for the creation of a Chinese garden at UNESCO
Headquarters
On 24 April 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence
of Mr Zhang Xinsheng, Chinese Vice-Minister of Education, former
mayor of the city of Suzhou, and former Chairman of UNESCO’s
Executive Board, by which the Suzhou Municipal Government has
offered to donate to UNESCO a Chinese Classic Garden of Suzhou
to be constructed at the Organization’s Headquarters in
Paris.

celebrates the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s membership
to UNESCO
On 21 April 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, launched a Commemorative Book marking the 50th anniversary
of Malaysia’s membership to UNESCO together with the country’s
Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun
Hussein. The ceremony took place at the Organization’s Headquarters
on the margins of the 181st session of UNESCO’s Executive
Board with the participation of Malaysia’s Permanent Delegate
to UNESCO, Mr Kenneth J. Luis, as well as numerous Ambassadors
and representatives from Member States.

Director-General inaugurates the exhibition on the millenium in
Lithuania
The Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, inaugurated
on April 17, 2009, at the UNESCO Headquarters, an exhibition entitled
“Lithuania Millenium: culture and history”. in the
ceremony also participated: Mr. Vygaudas Usackas, Minister of
Foreign affairs of Lithuania; Mrs Ina Marciulionyte, Ambassador
and permanent Delegate of Lithuania for UNESCO, and Mrs Tadelech
- Mikael haile, Ambassador and permanent Delegate of Ethiopia
for UNESCO.

celebrates the 2200th anniversary of the foundation of the city
of Tashkent, Uzbekistan
On 2 April 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro
Matsuura, inaugurated an exhibition to mark the 2200th anniversary
of the foundation of the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, at the
Organisation’s Headquarters. Mr Matsuura was joined by Ms
Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva, Permanent Delegate of the Republic of
Uzbekistan to UNESCO, Mr Khamidulla Kharamatov, First Deputy Minister
for Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, and Mr Nizom Bakhtiyarov, Deputy
Mayor of Tashkent.
