- The
North American Society for Oceanic History offers four categories
of awards:
- John Lyman Book Awards are given annually
by the Society in the following six categories: Canadian naval
and maritime history; U.S. naval history; U.S. maritime history;
science and technology; reference works and published primary
sources; and biography and autobiography. Books published
during the previous year or bearing a copyright date of the
previous year qualify for consideration. The award is named
in honor of John Lyman (1921-1977), oceanographer, maritime
historian, and a founder of NASOH. For further information

- K. Jack Bauer Award to honor those who
have given distinguished service to NASOH and have made life-time
contributions to the field of maritime history. Created in
1988, the award is named in honor of E. Jack Bauer (1926-1987),
naval historian and founder of the NASOH.
- Chad Smith Student Travel Grants are awarded
to assist students in funding travel to its annual meeting
to deliver a paper at the meeting. The award is named in honor
of Philip Chadwick Foster Smith, maritime museum curator,
maritime historian, and an early member of NASOH.
- Clark G. Reynolds Student Paper Award is
provided each year to the author of the best paper by a graduate
student delivered at the society's annual conference. Named
in honor of Clark G. Reynolds (1939-2005)—naval historian,
museum curator, and the first executive officer of NASOH—the
prize will consist of assistance in publishing the essay in
The Northern Mariner (the journal co-sponsored by NASOH and
the Canadian Nautical Research Society), a membership in NASOH,
a handsome plaque and the author's choice of $500 worth of
books published by the University Press of Florida.
- Award
for Advocacy - The Vernacular Architecture Forum (USA). Deadline
1 March 2009
The Vernacular Architecture Forum encourages and supports citizen
efforts to protect our vernacular built heritage. The protection
and preservation of our vernacular built heritage depends on good
stewardship by property owners supported by sound government land
use policies. However, the long-term preservation of our cultural
heritage is rarely achieved without the support of a well informed,
involved citizenry.The VAF seeks to encourage citizen-based advocacy
by recognizing exemplary efforts and achievements on behalf of
our vernacular built heritage. The VAF Award for Advocacy honors
individuals and groups for exceptional contribution toward the
appreciation and protection of vernacular buildings and landscapes.
The award recognizes outstanding initiative, commitment, and action
to promote and protect vernacular resources. The award may be
made in recognition of a specific advocacy effort, or on the basis
of the nominee's long-term record of advocacy.

Officer, LifeWeb - Secretariat of the Convention on Biological
Diversity (CBD). Deadline 15 February 2009
This post, for a three-year period with an initial appointment
of one year (renewable based on performance), is located at the
Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) at
Montreal, to serve as the coordinator of the LifeWeb Initiative
activities within the Secretariat. The LifeWeb Initiative was
proposed during the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties
(COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the
aim of improving global financing. The LifeWeb Initiative is a
voluntary, open and flexible initiative, which acts as a clearing-house
to link donors and recipients in the designation and improvement
of protected areas globally.

2nd International Digital Photography Competition “Different
Viewpoints: TRADITIONAL MEDITERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE”
Coinciding with the creation of the Union for the Mediterranean
(UpM) and the naming of Barcelona as the seat of its permanent
secretariat, we are pleased to announce the 2nd International
Digital Photography Competition “Different Viewpoints: TRADITIONAL
MEDITERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE”. RehabiMed’s aim with
this competition is to construct a territory of interrelation
in which social cohesion is the central objective. Once again,
the theme is traditional architecture in use today, its transformation
and the people who turn this possibility into a reality. The subjective
eye behind the camera offers differing viewpoints of everyday
relations with traditional spaces and the mutilation, the contrasts
and what still survives—in short, the context of the traditional
setting.

Director, Collections Conservation in Iraq
Cultural Heritage Project (CHP) in Iraq, being implemented by
International Relief and Development (IRD), is designed to focus
US and international resources and expertise on rebuilding the
professional capabilities of Iraq’s museum, heritage and
archaeology organizations, and antiquities preservation and management.
This is a two-year project funded by a grant from the U.S. Embassy
in Baghdad and administered by International Relief and Development.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications
and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Environmental
Design. The successful candidate must possess a strong commitment
to academic excellence; a record of accomplishment in scholarship
and/or practice that merits appointment at full professor level
in one of the four departments in the College; demonstrated leadership
abilities in an academic or professional context; knowledge and
appreciation of all the disciplines within the College; the ability
to foster and promote an environment supportive of a diverse student

Jean-Paul L'Allier Heritage Prize. Deadline for the reception

This prize is awarded every second year by the Organization of
World Heritage Cities to a city that is a member of the OWHC and
that has distinguished itself by its achievements in the conservation,
enhancement or management of property inscribed on the World Heritage
List, and located on its territory. A city that is a member in
good standing of the Organization of World Heritage Cities and
that has been so for the three preceding years may submit its
candidacy to be awarded the Jean-Paul L’Allier Heritage
Prize.

for Candidacies: Torsanlorenzo International Prize
The "TORSANLORENZO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE" 2009 is offered
with the aim of highlighting completed projects and promoting
the quality of forest and urban green spaces.
There are three sections, as follows:
- Section A - Landscape Design in Transformation of the Territory
– Actions for environment restoration, renewal and recovery;
- Section B - Urban Green Spaces – The quality of projects
in cities: squares, neighbourhood green spaces, urban and
private parks;
- Section C - Private Gardens in Cities and Suburbs.
The Prize is open to landscape architects, agronomists and
foresters worldwide or other professionals involved in landscape
and environment projects and enrolled on national and international
professional registers. Projects that have already won other
prizes are not eligible. Interested professionals should ensure
that the documentation cited in art. 4 will be sent by post
or express courier or delivered directly by hand no later than
Friday 6 March 2009. The Jury will meet on Friday 27 March 2009
at 10 am at the Prize site and the Prize-giving ceremony will
take place on Saturday 9th May 2009 at 10am.

UNESCO’s photo contest on The Changing Face of the Earth
has been won by 15 year-old Muatez Nasser Al-Adwan from Jordan
and, in the adult category, by Anil Risal Singh from India. The
contest was organized within the International Year of Planet
Earth, which set out to highlight the utility of geosciences for
society.

Requirements: Ph.D. in anthropology or related
discipline with a specialization in archaeology. Degree must be
completed by August 16, 2009. Visiting Scholar is selected on
the basis of a 5-page proposal outlining the nature and structure
of the conference, as well as on the strength of his/her vita
and references. Pre-application inquiries recommended.
Duties: Individual organizes, develops, and
stages the Center for Archaeological Investigations Visiting
Scholar Conference in spring 2010, resulting in an edited volume
of selected papers from the conference. The Visiting Scholar
assembles the volume manuscript and does substantive editing,
as needed, as well as writes the necessary volume integration
and synthesis sections. The individual is also expected to teach
one seminar in his/her specialty, interact productively with
colleagues and students in the Center and Department of Anthropology,
and pursue his/her own research during their term, which includes
directing on-going research activity, as well as preparing research
proposals and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship, a joint program of the Society
of Architectural Historians (SAH) and the Historic American Buildings
Survey (HABS), permits an architectural historian to work on a
12-week HABS project during the summer. The Fellow will either
conduct research on a nationally significant building or site
and prepare a written history to become part of the permanent
HABS collection, or conduct research on a particular topic relating
to architectural history in support of future HABS projects. The
Fellow will be stationed in the field working in conjunction with
a HABS measured drawings team, or in the HABS Washington, D.C.
office.

Each year the Society of American Archivists sponsors an awards
competition to recognize achievements in the archival profession.
Winners are selected by subcommittees of the SAA Awards Committee.
Awards are presented during a ceremony held in late summer at
the SAA Annual Meeting. The annual deadline for most award nominations

deadlines.) Nominations will be considered only if all materials,
including books and other supporting documentation, are postmarked

providing advice and services to the library, information, education
and cultural heritage communities and is based at the University
of Bath. As Research Officer (Text Digitisation), the post holder
will be a major part of UKOLN's contribution to the IMPACT (Improving
Access to Text) project, and would be responsible for the specification
and provision of high-quality documentation on text digitisation
topics and an integrated training programme. Applicants should
be happy working as part of a distributed team, be able to work
independently and prioritise tasks and be confident in dealing
with a range of external contacts. They should have specific knowledge
of digitisation concepts and techniques, of the wider contexts
of text digitisation, and of relevant digital library technologies

Parks Service in USA - Summer Employment
Heritage Documentation Programs seeks applications from qualified
individuals for summer employment documenting historic sites and
structures of architectural, landscape and technological significance
throughout the country. Duties involve on-site field work and
preparation of measured and interpretive drawings and written
historical reports for the HABS/HAER/HALS Collections at the Prints
and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Projects
last 12 weeks, beginning in late May or early June. Salaries range
from approximately $6,000 to approximately $11,000 for the summer,
depending on job responsibility, locality of the project, and
level of experience.

This aid, jointly organized by the Association of the Mayors of

In the category of Academic Technology | Teaching with Digital
Images in Classics & Humanities • Reed College
Through a collaboration involving Computing, the Library, Visual
Resources staff, and Classics faculty, Reed launched a pilot project
to develop and customize a CONTENTdm-based image collection for
teaching in Classics and Humanities. The success of this project
results from a multi-faceted approach that integrates systems,
content, metadata and web interfaces to build a comprehensive,
full-featured teaching resource.

Angeles County Museum of Art Conservation Center with the Camilla
Chandler Frost Summer Internship Program 2009/2010
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art Conservation Center is offering
two internships for summer study in the following areas: objects
conservation, textiles conservation, paintings conservation, paper
conservation and conservation science. The Camilla Chandler Frost
Conservation Internship Program Endowment provides funding for
travel from a conservation student’s school and a stipend
while working at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This year’s
stipend is $320 per week ($2,560 for eight weeks, $3,200 ten weeks,
or $3,840 twelve weeks). The stipend is intended to pay for food
and lodging. A travel allowance of $1,000 is provided to reimburse
the student for round trip travel from the graduate school location
to Los Angeles and to offset relocation expenses (as appropriate).

Civilisations Museum (Singapore) Research Fellowships 2009-10.

The Research and Publications Unit (RPU) of the Asian Civilisations
Museum is pleased to announce its inaugural fellowship grant.
The applications will be screened by a committee of eminent scholars
and will be administered by the RPU. One of the stated aims/objectives
of the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) for many years has been
to be a centre of research in Asian cultures and arts. Since its
opening at the Empress Place in 2003, the ACM has established
a reputation in the international museum arena for its excellent
gallery displays and exhibitions. The ACM is undertaking to develop
its research potential in the field of Asian archaeology, art
history and material culture, so as to become the regional hub
synonymous with excellent research projects and publications in
the field. The research fellowships are planned to generate in-depth
study, documentation and thought leading publications on specialised
aspects of Asian cultures.

for Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical
Constructions
Applications for the Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of
Monuments and Historical Constructions, approved and financially
sponsored by the European Commission within the framework of the
Erasmus Mundus Programme, have just opened. This Master Course
is organized by a Consortium of leading European Universities/Research
Institutions in the field, composed by University of Minho (coordinating
institution, Portugal), the Technical University of Catalonia
(Spain), the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic),
the University of Padua (Italy) and the Institute of Theoretical
and Applied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czech
Republic). The course combines the most recent advances in research
and development with practical applications. A significant number
of scholarships, ranging from 4000 to 21000 Euro, are available
to students of any nationality. The Consortium is also available
to host outstanding third-country scholars who are interested
in contributing to the Master Course Programme. Interested third-country
scholars may receive scholarships for teaching and research activities
for a period of up to three months.
