- European
Green Capital
The idea of a European Green Capital was originally conceived
at a meeting in Tallinn, Estonia. The meeting was held in May
2006 on the initiative of the former City Mayor, Jüri Ratas.
He says: "It is my belief that a green and sustainable Europe
is essential for improving public health and the quality of life
of our citizens". The general aim of the initiative is to
improve the European urban living environment – and thus
the environment as a whole. With 80 pct. of the European population
living in an urban environment, it is natural that cities play
a key role in making the environment greener and improving the
quality of life of its citizens. The award aims to provide an
incentive for cities to inspire each other and share best practices,
while at the same time engaging in friendly competition. In other
words, the cities become role models for each other.

The Heritage Canada Foundation is accepting nominations to Canada’s
Top Ten Endangered Places List. The list is released annually
to bring national attention to sites at risk due to neglect, lack
of funding, inappropriate development and weak legislation. It
has become a powerful tool in the fight to make landmarks, not
landfill. HCF uses three primary criteria to determine the 10
final sites for inclusion on the list:
- Significance of the site
- Urgency of the threat
- Community support for its preservation
If you know a site that should be included on our list, tell
us about it today. Click here

- Landscape
Architecture Competition
The City Council of Madrid (Spain) and the Owners’ Management
Board of Parque de Valdebebas, a new development in Madrid, would
like to announce the launching of an International Ideas Competition
for the design of an urban park. The Competition arises from the
need to create a quality green space for the use and enjoyment
of the future residents of the urban development, but also with
the ambition of becoming a recreation and nature reference for
the city as a whole. The aim of the competition is to secure the
services of a multidisciplinary team that will plan and design
a new urban park of approximately 80 hectares in Parque de Valdebebas.
The design should resolve the transition between the urban area
currently being developed and the adjacent forest park. Of utmost
importance will be the proposed uses and their suitability for
the scale and location of the park. To this end the winning design
will need to make the most of the planning, landscape, environmental
and social opportunities offered by the site. The competition
is a two-stage process with an initial open call for proposals,
at the level of conceptual design, from which six finalists will
be chosen to develop design proposals in the second stage. First
phase deadline for proposals: April 16 2009. The six finalists
resulting from the first phase will receive an honorarium of 10,000
€ to help cover costs.
