  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Entlebuch (Switzerland): Winner of TO DO Award
UNESCO BIOSPHERE ENTLEBUCH (UBE): Unlike earlier TO DO! winners, it is the first time that a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has received the TO DO! award: the Swiss UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch (UBE). What is special about the UBE is that the initiatives which were implemented here were not federal, regional or externally initiated. It was rather the local population which, in a municipal referendum in 2000, cast 94 percent of their votes in favour of entrusting the local politicians in charge in the municipalities with the task of submitting the application to UNESCO. In the following year, the Entlebuch region was already recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It was the first biosphere reserve to emerge through the involvement and decision of its inhabitants – upon a demand voiced “from below.” This had consequences at the international level. Today, all UNESCO biosphere applicants have to use the participation model of ENTLEBUCH as an orientation.

  • Call for Partners: Lifelong Learning Programme: Proposal of partnership for a European Project
As you will probably know, the EC launched a call for proposals in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme - Observation and Analysis - Key activity 1 Studies and comparative research - deadlines 31 March 2009. We in Ravello (italy) are working on the possibility of applying. The general outline of our proposal is herewith described:

The historical lands (a definition which coincides with the UNESCO terminology of cultural landscape, “combined works of nature and of man") is an extraordinary document of local material culture to be enhanced by means of a polyvalent and integrated action. In particular, traditional technologies – which are at the basis of a cultural landscape – are becoming a matter of interest, due to the increasing attention to eco-compatibility of the interventions and to the consumption of resources for the re-utilisation of the existing (buildings, roads, intensive cultivations, etc.). Therefore to recognize and to re-use such technologies is possible and necessary. But how to test them? Actually traditional technologies are often missing in the current academic teaching and vocational education. It is therefore “physiological” that new ones, even if are not improving the old ones, end up with replacing them; with the logical consequence that the knowledges implied in them are dying out. The Project KnoHL (Knowledges for Historical Lands) aims to carry out a study which, starting by the preliminary analysis of the educational systems of the Member States, with reference to the above mentioned technologies, provides a model which can:

    • Promote lifelong learning of professionals and craftsmen working in the field of historical lands
    • Complete their professional knowledge both with new technologies and with tools useful to strengthen their competitiveness and to improve their self-updating capacity (internet sites, e-commerce, e-marketing..)
    • integrate the knowledge, the testing and the possible improvement of traditional technologies, and their implied knowledges, in the educational systems of the Member states

Your institution, as well as you personal competences, would be a key element for the success of our application and therefore I'am writing to ask you to give your comments on our proposal to eventually join the KnoHL partnership. Unfortunately time is urging us and I have to ask for a prompt reply, possibly by the end of the week.
