  • Responsible Tourism Awards
The Trophy Selection Committee of the 3rd Edition of the Responsible Tourism Awards was held on the last 14 May in Paris, with the purpose of choosing the nominees of the 2009 edition… Considering the qualitative and quantitative evolution of the applications received, the Selection Committee had to reorganize the different trophies: First of all, the Trophy Selection Committee chose 4 nominees in the category Small Lodging Facility. On the other hand, the Trophy Selection Committee made the decision to include the categories “Tour operator” and “Travel agency” under the same heading: Responsible tour. This decision is justified for the following reasons: a reduced number of applications received in the category “Agency” and the existence of a borderline between the jobs of the candidates of these categories (tour operator, agency and host). The Selection Committee chose 19 nominees for the categories aimed at the main tourism agents and 3 Laureates for the Trophy Humanitarian Trip, aimed at the general public.

  • Award nomination for Petit Loango film
The documentary film on oil exploration in Petit Loango National Park in Gabon, commissioned by GRASP and the Ramsar Convention, was nominated for a ROSCAR Award at the 2009 Wild Talk Africa Film Festival in Durban. The film was screened on 22 April 2009 at the festival, followed by a discussion with GRASP Chief Consultant and Year of the Gorilla Ambassador, Ian Redmond. Although the film did not bring home the award, the nomination was certainly a great achievement in itself given the number of entries. • Travel + Leisure's fifth annual Global Vision Awards – call for nominations
Information about important preservation projects around the world is being gathered for Travel + Leisure's fifth annual Global Vision Awards. Any projects that are in the fields of CULTURAL PRESERVATION (music, crafts, literature, language, food, traditions, etc) and HISTORIC PRESERVATION (architecture, buildings, archaeological sites) are eligible. Nominated projects can be small or big, run by a single individual or a larger non-profit organization, government, or private company – as long as they are doing important work in the preservation of buildings, historic sites, or culture in general: food, music, art, dress, local traditions. Of special interest are projects that use preservation as an engine for economic development and support for local communities. The other important thing is the timing: the project should either be nearing completion or (fairly) recently completed, or just breaking ground – something that signals momentum. Anyone who’d like to nominate a project for these awards should contact Jaime Gross jaime_gross@yahoo.com by 3 June 2009. Please include either a brief description of the project (with weblinks where available) or more detailed information such as what the project has achieved so far in the realm of preservation, what its upcoming goals are and why it's important.

  • Mediterranean projects of interuniversity scientific co-operation (MeRSI): call 2009 - Deadline 31 August 2009
Nowadays the Mediterranean area, influenced by the Union for the Mediterranean, appears especially important as a place from the point of view of the international scientific community. The 23 coastal countries are indeed united by a common history but also by common challenges. In the first place one should consider the issue of environment with the notions of sustainable co-development, the impact of climate change and the issues of water or power resources. Then, in a cultural and social scope, this region is a centre of tensions but also of cultural and inter-religious dialogue, although in the same way confronted with the question of migratory flows that face the developed Northern border and the more disadvantaged Southern border. All these issues and their theoretical or applied developments are of direct interest to the scientific community due to the exchange and transfer of new and useful knowledge.
