  • JOB OFFERS - Deputy Director for Management at the World Heritage Centre in the Culture Sector of UNESCO. Deadline: 20 September 2009
    Under the general authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture and the direct supervision of the Director of the World Heritage Centre (WHC), and in close cooperation with the Deputy Director in charge of the Programme, the incumbent will contribute to setting the overall policy framework for the planning, implementation and review of the work of WHC. He/she shall be responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of the administration and management functions of WHC to ensure that it performs at the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness. The incumbent shall advise the Director of the World Heritage Centre, as well as the Deputy Director in charge of the Programme, on appropriate administrative and financial procedures, ensuring relevant coherence between programme and management for monitoring purposes.

  • Laureates of the 2009 Clio prize for the French-speaker archaeological investigation abroad
    On Wednesday 24 June, the jury made up of Egyptologist Françoise Dunand, professors Jean-Louis Huot and Pierre Cabanes, respectively specialists in old Mesopotamia and Albania, and Jean Guilaine, professor of the Collège de France, specialist in the European Protohistory, chose, from the eighteen candidates, the winners of the twelfth Clio prize. The first prize was awarded to Hélène Roche for her work carried out in Kenya, in the western border of the Turkana Lake related to life of the hominids at the beginning of the old Pleistocene. Research related to a time sequence that goes from old Oldowayen to the middle Acheuleen, that is, from 2.3 million years to 700,000 years…

  • Call for UNESCO-Keizo Obuchi Fellowship applications from young researchers
    UNESCO is inviting young researchers in developing countries to apply for grants through the UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowship Programme, financed for the tenth time by Japan through funds-in-trust dedicated to the development of human resources. The programme – named after the late Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi who was known for his commitment to development issues – offers a total of 20 fellowships for a maximum value of US$6,000-10,000 each. They target post-graduate university researchers with a Masters Degree or equivalent in one of four fields: the environment, inter-cultural dialogue, information and communication technology, and peaceful conflict resolution.

  • Cuba received UNESCO Medal of Cultural diversity
    Havana, June 2009. - The recognition of UNESCO and its Member States to Cuba and to prestigious intellectuals and Cuban artists by its tireless cultural work to the benefit of the humanity expressed Ambassador Olabibi Babalola Joseph Yaï, Chairperson of the Executive Board of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture and Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Benin before that organization, in a ceremony held at the UNESCO’s headquarters in this capital. The meeting was presented by the UNESCO Representative in Cuba and Regional Director of Culture for Latin America and the Caribbean, Herman van Hooff, who stressed the importance of the official visit to Cuba of the Ambassador Yaï and his conversations with Cuban leaders, intellectuals and artists. He also emphasized how pleased is the institution to welcome the presence in Cuba of such a distinguished personality.

  • Director-General of UNESCO pays tribute to laureates of Holocaust Essay Competition
    On 7 July 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, welcomed at the Organization’s Headquarters young Russian and Estonian laureates of the annual Holocaust Essay competition organized by the Russian Holocaust Foundation. The ceremony took place in the presence of Mrs Beate Klarseld, Dr Ilya Altman, Director of the Russian Holocaust Foundation, and Dr Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesental Centre. Noting that this ceremony coincided with the holding at Headquarters of the World Conference on Higher Education, the Director-General emphasized that it was crucial for UNESCO to promote awareness of the Holocaust through quality education at all levels, as specifically requested by Resolution 61 unanimously adopted by UNESCO’s 34th General Conference in October 2007.

  • President Lula da Silva awarded Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize at UNESCO
    Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, was awarded the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, at the Organization’s Headquarters on 7 July. The Prize was awarded in the presence of the President of Senegal Abdoulaye Wade; the President of Cape Verde, Pedro Pires; the Prime Minister of Portugal, José Socrates; the Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, Abdou Diouf; former President of the Côte d’Ivoire Henri Konan Bédié; former President of Portugal Mario Soares, who is also the Vice president of the Jury of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize; alongside the President of UNESCO’s General Conference, George N. Anastassopoulos (Greece) and the Chairman of the Organization’s Executive Board Olabiyi Babalola Joseph Yaï (Benin).

  • 2009 Fitch Foundation Grant
    The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation will award research grants of up to $25,000 to mid-career professionals who have an academic background, professional experience, and an established identity in historic preservation or related fields including, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, architectural history, and the decorative arts. The Foundation will also grant the Richard L. Blinder Award, a biennial award of up to $15.000 for the best proposal exploring the preservation of an existing structure, complex of buildings, or genre of building type for use for a cultural purpose.
  • European Heritage Grand Prize Winners Announced - 6 June 2009 Sicily (Italy)
    The European Union and Europa Nostra announced the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award Grand Prize winners at its awards ceremony on 6 June 2009. Seven grand prize winners were chosen from the previously selected 28 winners for demonstrating outstanding heritage achievements across Europe. Having shown remarkable efforts in their various categories, the seven projects were singled-out from the original 138 awards entries that spanned 24 European countries. The awards were jointly launched in 2002 by the European Commission and Europa Nostra to celebrate extraordinary initiatives within the field of Europe's cultural heritage with the aim to promote high standards and high-quality skills in conservation practice. The 2009 winners were no exception to this, demonstrating exceptional conservation, research and education efforts, as well as exemplary dedicated service in the field of cultural heritage.
  • Laretna T. Adishakti, member of ICOMOS Indonesia, wins 14th Nikkei Asia Prize
    Through her heritage organizations Jogja Heritage Society and Indonesian Heritage Trust as well as Universitas Gadjah Mada, Laretna T. Adishakti spearheading a campaign to protect the city of Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java; conducting initiatives on the Revitalization of Kotagede Heritage District Post-earthquake; studying the saujana (cultural landscape) of Borobudur World Cultural Heritage Temple and its environment to ensure its proper heritage management, and formulating heritage education for schools in Indonesia. Normally, it is the government that leads the protection of the historical sites, but she insists that the local inhabitants that should also take action in protecting and utilizing the entire "saujana heritage". The Award Ceremony took place at the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo on Wednesday 20 May 2009. On behalf of all of the members of ICOMOS we extend our warmest congratulations to Ms. Adishakti.

  • Interuniversity projects of scientific co-operation (PCSI): Call for candidatures. Deadline: 30 September 2009
    The The Agence universitaire de la Francophonie launches a call for interuniversity projects of scientific co-operation - PCSI, multilateral co-operation projects on training and research whose primary target is to promote a logic of sustainable structuring for scientific, academic and institutional co-operation. There are three types of projects of interuniversity scientific co-operation (PCSI) can be of three types:
    • Shared research projects (and/or from research training);
    • Shared training projects;
    • hared drafts of university management.

     

  • Prize WISE 2009: call for candidatures
    The Qatar Foundation organizes, from 16 to 18 November 2009, a world forum on innovation applied to education, the “World Innovation for Education Summit ” (Wise). This meeting will be the occasion to gather faculty, scientists, scholars, politicians and economic stakeholders with the purpose of exchanging ideas and defining new possibilities to work on new educational approaches and build 21st century educational models.
  • AUF Scholarships and mobility grants: 2009-2010 selection
    A total of 244 mobility grants for PhD or post postdoctoral levels have been granted for the period 2009-2010 following an international call for candidatures. Other mobility grants will be offered later on regional calls for candidatures. The appointment will be final after the receipt of admission certificates from the host institutions and the initiation file completed by the selected candidates. The results of the mobility grants 2009-2010 are available from the Web of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie.
