  • Surprise Award for Maritime Mentor (Australia)
Dr Leonie Foster became only the fourth recipient of the "Jack Loney Memorial Award For Outstanding Contribution and Excellence in Maritime Heritage" for her groundbreaking research, longstanding committee membership and mentoring of maritime heritage professionals in Australia. Established in 1996, the Award recalls the dedication and leading role played by prolific maritime author Jack Loney, whose work contributed much to the establishment of the Historic Shipwrecks Advisory committee, Queenscliff Maritime Centre an the Maritime Archaeology Association of Victoria. Leonie started work with the Historic Shipwrecks Unit of the Victoria Archaeological Survey [the predecessor of Heritage Victoria’s Maritime Heritage Unit] more than 20 years ago, bringing a new academic rigour to the publications being produced by Maritime archaeologists (and others) at VAS. Promoting and developing the understanding of Australian, and particularly Victorian Maritime History, Leonie’s studies on Victoria’s shipwrecks, were the first to introduce the thematic approach to researching of the 650 or so wrecks lying in Victorian waters.
