- Civil Society Dialogue - Istanbul 2010 European Capital
of Culture
This created the opportunity for Istanbul to apply for the title
of European Capital of Culture 2010. Istanbul is a fast –changing
metropolis with all problems and challenges associated with such
large urban forms in developing countries. It is the unofficial
capital city in terms of the creative energy and transformative
dynamism it generates as a result of being the centre of finance,
media, culture and communications and the service industries of
Turkey. But at the same time, it is an urban phenomenon of huge
contrasts and tensions as a result of the devastating experience
of the last three decades of internal and external migrations,
economic transformation, and exposure to global financial and
speculative flows and growing disparities in wealth and access
to resources.

- Call for applications: PhD Programs 2010 - Management
and Development of Cultural Heritage. Deadline for Applications:
4 December 2009
The program trains both researchers and professionals, able to
operate at the highest levels of management of Cultural Heritage
and Landscape, in both public and private institutions. The program
integrates concepts and methods from several domains (humanities,
economics, law, information technologies, material sciences) in
the analysis of cultural heritage and landscape. The program provides
a consistent multidisciplinary path where students are provided
with competencies which nowadays cannot be obtained but through
particular self-training initiatives. The job market today has
to rely on various professional figures - thus incurring conflicts
and standstills in the decision-making process - or is forced
to choose only one competence among all the needed ones. A distinctive
feature of the program is the involvement of Ph.D. students in
projects, both on local and international scale, so as to make
them familiar with the complex management of cultural heritage
and landscape.

Each year the PRIZE, whose primary goal is to foster a larger
awareness and understanding of the social art of architecture,
sponsors an Essay Competition, a Travel Fellowship Competition,
and an Architectural Design Fellowship Competition. All are open
to undergraduates studying architecture throughout the world.
A total of $9500 in prize money is awarded to the Essay Competition
winners with a guaranteed $4000 first place prize. The Travel
Fellow(s) is given round-trip air-fare and a stipend to attend
a significant architectural event in the summer of 2009. The Architectural
Design Fellow(s) is given a $2500 honorarium and money to fund
prizes for a local design competition. Students are asked to submit
a 500-word Essay Proposal in response to a posted Question. The
2010 PRIZE Question revolves around the topic of Historic Preservation/Heritage
Conservation. The Proposals are due on November 1, 2009. Approximately
25 student semifinalists are invited to expand their proposal
into a 2500-word essay due in mid-February, 2010. From this pool,
5-7 Finalist essays are forwarded to the 2008 BERKELEY PRIZE Essay
