  • Heritage Icon Awards. Tasmania (Australia)
This year’s Tasmanian Heritage Icon Awards include Hobart’s Theatre Royal, Tasmanian cool climate wines, and shell necklaces made by Indigenous Tasmanians. The 10 icons and one Children’s Choice Icon are selected by an independent panel from among hundreds of community nominations. The 10 Tasmanian Heritage Icons and one Children’s Choice Icon now join last year’s inaugural list. Managing Director of the National Trust Chris Tassell said the community responded strongly to the Icon Awards and there was now an additional group of worthy icons that truly represent what Tasmania is about. “We think it is a great thing that the community is able to recognise our State’s distinct cultural heritage and the success of the program indicates how important these icons are to Tasmanians,” Mr Tassell said. Director of Heritage Tasmania Pete Smith said community initiatives are a really important way of identifying and celebrating those things that are important and unique about Tasmania. “It acts as an important extension of our statutory work to protect places of local and State historic heritage significance,” Mr Smith said. “There are many things that are important to Tasmania, some warrant statutory protection, others don’t. Initiatives such as this are an excellent way of giving members of the public the chance to say what they think is important and note-worthy about Tasmania,” he added. The Trust’s partners in the icons program includes Tasmanian Perpetual Trustees and the Australian Government Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

  • Heritage Victoria: Dimboola award (Australia)
Dimboola celebrated its 150th anniversary over the Melbourne Cup weekend, opened the town’s second museum and received the Heritage Council’s 2009 Heritage Award. The $2000 cheque and framed certificate were presented to the Dimboola and District Historical Society by Deputy Chair Shelley Penn (below left with secretary Evelyn King) at a ceremony on October 30 which also marked the official opening of the new Dimboola Letterpress and Print Museum. Awarded for ‘an exceptional contribution to Victoria’s heritage’, the Heritage Council award recognised the society’s efforts to prevent the demolition of the 1975 Dimboola Court House. A successful campaign and fundraising saw the building moved and restored and it is now the core of the local museum. The Society repeated this effort in 2004 to save the old Dimboola Banner office and print shop. The building was purchased for the Society by Marjie Wilson who officially opened the new print museum. At the opening, a significant supporter of the society Geoff Handbury AO, announced a further $35,000 donation for museum. Volunteers involved with the print museum include longtime printer and former editor of the Dimboola Banner Joe Barry (below centre).

This accumulation of quality caught the attention of the organizers of Exponatec, probably the most important international fair for Museums, Conservation and Heritage. This year will be the third time we join forces to present professional quality in all its aspects. We have chosen the best and the best presented projects from previous two years in Dubrovnik and asked them to comment again on their experience, this time in Cologne. Many members of Excellence Club will send their publications and posters and so we demonstrate the quality of their publishing too. As we continue with our core event in Dubrovnik, the Club will obviously grow and serve as a reminder of their inspiring example. The Excellence Club represents a privileged choice to be consulted as the rising number of visits of our site demonstrates.

  • PRIZES - The Great Man-Made River International Water Prize for Arid and Semi-Arid Zones awarded to Dr. Chahbani
The Prize is awarded in recognition of fundamental and substantial contributions to the assessment, development, management and/or use of water resources in arid and semi-arid areas. It is made possible by a generous donation from the government of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. The Great Man-Made River International Water Prize for Arid and Semi-Arid Zones is awarded to Dr Bellachheb Chahbani whose research findings over the last 25 years at the Institute of Arid Regions in Médenine, Tunisia, have led to the development of an approach to improve water use. This new approach improves water use through the employment of both buried stone pockets in deep soil terraces and shallow water diffusing systems, which prevents surface water from evaporating and reduces weed growth, and small earth dams for water collection and direct water use. His approach limits run off and optimizes the use of water that would otherwise render the soil saline. In developing this approach, Dr Chahbani identified and overcame numerous technical aspects and recruited not only researchers but also local farmers to test the effectiveness of his ‘stone pocket’ technology...

  • JOB OFFERS - ENCATC PRAXIS Newsletter: stage / job opportunities in Europe and beyond
The aim of this ENCATC Newsletter is to allow graduate and post graduate students, as well as professionals; to identify placements and internships in different countries corresponding to their particular needs. Work placements and internships are an increasingly common feature of the growing number of training programmes of our members and also becoming more popular form of personal professional development for individual managers and administrators. As more and more educators introduce a European dimension in their curricula, they also encourage their students to look for their internship in another European country. Also the students themselves recognize the need and value of a working experience in another country than their own for their future career development. Cultural cooperation within Europe is an element of cultural life that cannot be ignored by any organization in cultural sector and therefore the demand for employees with European experience is constantly increasing. Clearly, particular problems are created in cross-frontiers placements in the area of information. PRAXIS already proved to be a valuable and useful tool enabling students, as well as professionals to find and arrange their internship placement successfully, and the potential hosting organizations to present themselves and their placement offers to a larger public.
