Conference on Education for Sustainable Development - Workshops
ESD can contribute substantially to addressing key sustainable
development challenges. Indeed, without reorienting education,
successfully confronting issues like water and climate change,
among many others, will not be possible. Moreover, introducing
sustainable development issues into all areas of education will
help to make education more relevant. Engaging students and learners
in contemporary questions related to development brings education
closer to life and enhances the learning experience by stimulating
motivation and interest.
- Workshop 4: ESD and disaster risk reduction: building
disaster-resilient societies
This workshop built on the ongoing dialogue and existing good
practices on education for disaster risk reduction at the
global, regional and local levels to enhance exchange of experiences
and cooperation in developing effective strategies towards
disaster prevention education implementation. The session
involved a broad range of actors from the education and disaster
risk management sectors and fostered an interaction between
experts in disaster risk reduction, education decision makers,
educators, public authorities and the non-governmental community.
- Workshop 8: The Economic Pillar of Sustainable Development:
Educational Approaches
In addressing the knowledge aspects of the identified economic
challenges, the workshop analyzed the status, trends and innovative
initiatives in this respect and indicated the way forward.
The examined action points at the workshop included establishing
or strengthening learning and knowledge network and linkages,
improving quality of teaching-leaning and bringing the ESD
perspective into educational content and method; overcoming
the digital divide; and promoting the achievement of EFA goals
and MDGs – all in relation to poverty reduction.
- Workshop 20: The role of Higher Education and research
in ESD
Higher education and research have much to contribute to the
global effort for education for sustainable development (ESD).
The vast majority of today’s leaders attended institutions
of higher education (IHEs) and the leaders of tomorrow will
also. IHEs educate or “train” many of the professionals
in our societies. Because these professionals work in or manage
people who work in every economic sector both private and
public, it is important that higher education incorporate
sustainability into all of its programs.

Verdi - Green visions for Milan 2015
Since the 1990s, the Italian city of Milan has undergone a process
of rapid transformation. The decommissioning of a number of older
industrial facilities having central, inner-city locations has
catalyzed a series of urban developments. Playing a significant
role has been a targeted treatment of green and open spaces and
landscape areas in a constructive dialogue with urban planning
and architecture. This exhibition, organized by AedesLand, features
six exemplary projects related to this plan, all developed under
the landscape planning management of Andreas Kipar and Giovanni
Sala together with their international team LAND (“Landscape
Architecture Nature Development”). The exhibition also presents
the landscape planning strategy elaborated by the LAND team for
the development of the territory surrounding Milan. AedesLand,
Savignyplatz, Else-Ury-Bogen 600 - 601, 10623 Berlin. April 3–June

Signs
of the city
The big city is a sea of signs: we are surrounded by an exciting,
pictographic labyrinth, whether in notices, posters, graffiti or advertising.
Using digital cameras and GPS-receivers, teenagers and young adults
have explored this semiotic realm, which invites a continual process
of linking and association. Accompanied and encouraged by professional
artists, they become authors of contemporary urban life. The emerging
views of the European metropolises Barcelona, Berlin, London and Sofia
are not only fascinating and often surprising; the four cities are
interwoven using innovative possibilities of data processing to create
an image of the European city that has never been seen before. In
addition, Signs of the City: Metropolis Speaking shows the full range
of this year-long project – workshops, the photo-community on
the Internet, exhibitions and conferences – and introduces readers
to the network comprising more than 30 institutions. |
