  • Frank and Franco in the wardrobe. Interview with Frank O. Gehry - ABITARE
Frank Gehry and I had been friends since 1975 when Frank was still not very well known on the international scene and I was exploring new ideas for the 1976 Venice Biennale. But Frank had already started to make a name for himself among the less orthodox Californian architects with the house for his artist friend Ron Davis, with his houses in Malibu and Venice, California and with the Santa Monica Place. • EDUCATION/EU COUNCIL: Education and training for the Europe of 2020. Bruxelles (Belgium) 15 February 2010
On 15 February at Brussels, the Council of the European Union discussed the role of education and training in Europe's strategy to promote growth and jobs and underlined its place at the heart of an economy based on knowledge and innovation, against the background of preparations for the new ‘EU 2020’ strategy to replace that of Lisbon. The Council began by adopting the 2010 joint progress report on the implementation of the "Education & Training 2010" programme in the period 2007-2009. Overall, the report shows an improvement in education performance across Europe, with EU policies helping to promote reforms at national level. At the same time, important challenges remain, in particular concerning literacy levels.

  • EDUCATION/EU COMMISSION: Speech by Commissioner Vassiliou on "Education & Training for the Europe of 2020" Education, Youth & Culture Council of Ministers. Bruxelles (Belgium) 15 February 2010
Let me first thank the Presidency for providing us with the opportunity to exchange views on the contribution of education and training to the future EU strategy for growth, social inclusion and sustainable development. A great number of jobs have been lost during the crisis and new work places will primarily emerge in areas that need higher skills levels. In 2020, it is estimated that 35% of all jobs will require high qualifications - compared to 29% today. This will mean 15 million more jobs with high qualifications.

  • The International Cultural Patronage of Firms: a contribution to public diplomacy
After 20 years of the introduction of the modern cultural patronage of firms in Spain have gone by, its contribution to cultural and public state diplomacy is described here. The international cultural patronage of Spanish firms presents itself as an important contribution to informal diplomacy within the domain of public diplomacy, due to the elements of relations and communication that the strategic and philanthropic action of firms brings with it. In other countries, the firms that carry out this project are worthy of special consideration. In Spain, this should not be separated from a necessary implementation in the fiscal legislation and it should incorporate the outstanding tools from other neighbouring countries, without forgetting the advocacy aspect of culture, which is practically inexistent in our country and which is necessary especially when it does not seem to provoke the social enthusiasm that it used to in the next past.

  • PARENTHESIS / CHA:COL - New School of Planning and Architecture (India)
Our friends from CHA:COL shared with us their urban strategy, PARENTHESIS, with us. When the New School of Planning and Architecture decide to relocate an institution, CHA:COL imagined this new school as an interconnected whole where the plan connects disparate structures with the natural environment. Set in India, the country already has a rich history of education that synthesizes the exterior with the interior, so CHA:COL’s strategy enforces this pedagogical mentality.

  • Shelter for Haiti / Andres Duany
In just a short period of time since the earthquake hit Haiti, designers have been proposing possible housing solutions for the country. We will share a variety of these housing schemes with you throughout the week, with the hope that they will encourage more people to get involved to help not only Haiti, but also Chile. The first proposal is designed by Andres Duany, a Miami architect. Duany, with the help of sociologists and anthropologists, has designed four different versions of a temporary structure to relieve the urgent need for housing in Haiti. The differences in the homes respond to the varying ways Haitians live, so that each home is tailored to their specific needs.

Urban Design and reneval in Contemporary City: The case of Portugal / Progetto e rinnovo urbano nella città contemporanea: Il caso del Portogallo
Autore: Bruno Pelucca
Data pubblicazione: Marzo 2010
Copyright: Esempi di Architettura - ISSN 2035-7982
In the last few years, following the entry of Portugal in the European Community, the implementation and realization of plans have allowed the renewal of Portuguese cities to flourish. Numerous interventions, that took place in a short period of time, allow an evaluation of the effectiveness of the urban project applied to a cultural context and planning tradition which is comparable to the Italian one. The study is articulated as a “grassroots research”, starting with the analysis of numerous urban and architectural projects that investigate the relationship between legislative reform, financial instruments, elaboration of plans and architectural realization...

Cultural Capitals: Revaluing The Arts, Remaking Urban Spaces
Louise C. Johnson, Deakin University, Australia. 2009
ISBN 978-0-7546-4977-9
Associate Professor Louise Johnson’s book title ‘Cultural Capitals: Revaluing The Arts, Remaking Urban Spaces’, is a book about the power of the arts to enhance city images, urban economies and communities.
Anchored in academic discussion of the Cultural Industries - what they are, how they have emerged, why they matter and how they should be theorized - the book offers a series of case studies drawn from five countries: Australia, Singapore, Spain, the UK and the US to examine how the arts contribute to sustainable urban regeneration.
‘While the mantra of cultural capitals has dominated recent debates about urban vitality, this is the first warts-and-all analysis of the experience of first and second order cultural capitals through longitudinal comparative studies. This is a timely and inspiring contribution to the debate about the potential of the arts to enhance urban images, economies and communities.’ Jennifer Craik, University of Canberra, Australia.

Developing attitudes to recognition: substantial differences in an age of globalisation
Author(s): E.Stephen Hunt and Sjur Bergan (eds)
ISBN: 978-92-871-6697-5
The concept of "substantial differences" - far from being a dry, technical topic for a book on higher education policy - goes to the heart of how we view qualifications and education and is the key concept of the Council of Europe/UNESCO Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region, better known as the Lisbon Recognition Convention. What do learners know and understand and what are they able to do on the basis of their qualifications? How can this be expressed and described, and how can learners carry their qualifications across borders without leaving part of their real value behind?

In discussions on substantial differences, the technical meets the philosophical, the administrative meets the political. Decisions on recognition, made in considering whether a difference is substantial, have a direct influence on applicants' future study and employment opportunities, but also reveal how those who make the decisions view themselves, their education system and their societies.

TRADITION AND INNOVATION IN HOSPITALITY Palermo International Design Competition
Autore: Cesare Sposito - Università di Palermo
Data pubblicazione: Dicembre 2009
Copyright: Esempi di Architettura ISSN 2035-7982
There is an on-going debate today on the subject of the relationship between city and architecture; this cultural and disciplinary backdrop requires in-depth studies on a variety of themes and a great number of disciplinary contributions. Over the centuries Man has left his mark on the land and in order to fully understand the wide-ranging modifications, it could be important to assess architecture specifically built for hospitality; in particular, its conceptual, spatial, functional and technological peculiarities need to be considered. Publication reports the results of the International Design Competition whose subject was the complete interior design (furniture and artefacts of communication) for 14 themed rooms Suite d’Autore. The goals were to promote artists and designers, to project a structure that had a cultural and educational meaning for guests and that the rooms and public areas were decorated with sculptures, paintings, photo-graphs and artefacts of communication related to the rooms’ themes.
